Biologists from Heinrich Heine University Dusseldorf along with researchers in Cologne and Frankfurt identified specific brain circuits that help determine which jobs worker bees take on as they age inside a colony. By manipulating a particular gene, the team could selectively reduce activity in certain neural circuits, and when those circuits were switched off, older worker bees reverted to caring for the queen instead of performing their normal later life duties like foraging or guarding the hive. The findings were published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

This matters because a bee colony's division of labor has always looked remarkably well organized despite having no central planner directing which bee does what job on any given day. The new research suggests that communication between specific neural circuits, tied to a gene involved in sex determination pathways, is what actually drives whether an individual worker nurses the queen, builds and guards the hive, or heads out to search for food

Study author Professor Beye described this as opening a new way to explore the fundamentals of innate behavioral diversity and social cooperation, since the same underlying genetic and neural mechanism may help explain coordination in other social animals too. It is a nice example of how a seemingly simple insect behavior turns out to be governed by a surprisingly specific piece of neural wiring once someone actually goes looking for it
