Xbox unveils a wave of 25th anniversary hardware, from a blind box Backbone controller to a translucent green console

Xbox rolled out its Designed for Xbox 25th Anniversary Collection this week, a set of hardware and accessories celebrating a quarter century since the original console launched back in 2001. The collection spans multiple manufacturers and product categories, all built around nostalgic callbacks to the brand's earliest hardware design language.

The centerpiece is the Backbone Pro Xbox 25th Anniversary Edition, which revives three heritage colorways, Iconic Blue, Bold Orange, and Crystal Clear, each a direct nod to the original 2001 hardware's launch colors. Rather than letting buyers simply choose a colorway outright, Backbone is selling it in a blind box format, meaning purchasers won't know which specific variant they're getting until they actually open it, turning a mobile gaming controller into something closer to a genuine collectible. PowerA is contributing an Xbox branded sling bag designed specifically to fit the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handheld devices, and GameSir has built the X5 Lite for Xbox, a mobile connectivity accessory aimed at the same handheld and mobile gaming crowd.

This follows an already announced limited edition Xbox Series X25 console and matching Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition revealed back in June, both featuring translucent OG Green casing that directly echoes the original Xbox's iconic startup color and glowing center logo. The console's green X lights up on power on as a direct callback to the original startup animation, and both the console and controller feature fully transparent back panels showing the classic Xbox logo underneath. That collection ships together in select markets in November, with the controller also available separately for anyone who doesn't want to buy an entirely new console just for the retro aesthetic.

Beyond hardware, the broader 25th anniversary push includes Razer collaborations on an anniversary edition mouse, keyboard, and headset, alongside community focused efforts like new fan submitted designs and a FanFest tour. Xbox Game Pass is also adding a run of titles tied to the celebration, including Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and several other new additions, positioning the anniversary as a sustained, multi month celebration across hardware, software, and community events rather than a single announcement moment

The blind box format for the Backbone controller is a genuinely bold choice for what's ultimately still a functional gaming accessory rather than a purely decorative collectible figure. Curious how much backlash that specific format generates from people who just want a guaranteed specific color rather than gambling on which variant they end up with

Translucent Crystal Clear as one of the three heritage colorways is such a perfect callback specifically for anyone who actually owned the clear controllers and accessories that were genuinely everywhere in early 2000s consumer tech generally, not even limited to gaming specifically. That whole translucent plastic aesthetic really was completely inescapable in electronics design back then

Twenty five years already feels like a genuinely long time for the Xbox brand specifically, and it's a good reminder of just how much the console gaming landscape has actually shifted since that original 2001 launch. Xbox went from being the new, unproven challenger entering a market Sony and Nintendo already dominated to being one of exactly three major players still standing in that same space today

The ROG Xbox Ally sling bag accessory quietly confirms just how central handheld gaming has actually become to the current Xbox strategy, not just as a side project experiment but as a genuinely core part of where the brand is investing real design and accessory attention right now.

A quarter century ago Xbox was purely a living room console competing directly against PlayStation and GameCube on the TV screen. Now a meaningful chunk of anniversary merchandise is specifically built around handheld and mobile gaming use cases instead, which says a lot about how much the actual core gaming experience has genuinely diversified across form factors over that same twenty five year span

Spreading the celebration out across hardware drops, Razer collaborations, community design contests, and a dedicated tour rather than cramming everything into one single announcement day is a smart, deliberate way to keep sustained media attention and community engagement going across several consecutive months instead of one brief news cycle that fades within a day or two

Wonder how much actual functional difference exists between these various anniversary editions and their completely standard counterparts, versus this being almost entirely a purely cosmetic paint job and packaging exercise dressed up as a meaningful hardware release. Not necessarily a knock against it if so, nostalgic cosmetic releases like these clearly still sell reliably well regardless of whether there's any real functional upgrade underneath the surface
