Xbox unveils a wave of 25th anniversary hardware, from a blind box Backbone controller to a translucent green console

Xbox rolled out its Designed for Xbox 25th Anniversary Collection this week, a set of hardware and accessories celebrating a quarter century since the original console launched back in 2001. The collection spans multiple manufacturers and product categories, all built around nostalgic callbacks to the brand's earliest hardware design language.

The centerpiece is the Backbone Pro Xbox 25th Anniversary Edition, which revives three heritage colorways, Iconic Blue, Bold Orange, and Crystal Clear, each a direct nod to the original 2001 hardware's launch colors. Rather than letting buyers simply choose a colorway outright, Backbone is selling it in a blind box format, meaning purchasers won't know which specific variant they're getting until they actually open it, turning a mobile gaming controller into something closer to a genuine collectible. PowerA is contributing an Xbox branded sling bag designed specifically to fit the ROG Xbox Ally and Ally X handheld devices, and GameSir has built the X5 Lite for Xbox, a mobile connectivity accessory aimed at the same handheld and mobile gaming crowd.

This follows an already announced limited edition Xbox Series X25 console and matching Wireless Controller X25 Special Edition revealed back in June, both featuring translucent OG Green casing that directly echoes the original Xbox's iconic startup color and glowing center logo. The console's green X lights up on power on as a direct callback to the original startup animation, and both the console and controller feature fully transparent back panels showing the classic Xbox logo underneath. That collection ships together in select markets in November, with the controller also available separately for anyone who doesn't want to buy an entirely new console just for the retro aesthetic.

Beyond hardware, the broader 25th anniversary push includes Razer collaborations on an anniversary edition mouse, keyboard, and headset, alongside community focused efforts like new fan submitted designs and a FanFest tour. Xbox Game Pass is also adding a run of titles tied to the celebration, including Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy and several other new additions, positioning the anniversary as a sustained, multi month celebration across hardware, software, and community events rather than a single announcement moment
