Game music has a way of burrowing into your memory. Hours spent with the same tracks looping in the background means some tunes become permanently stuck. Years later, a few notes can bring back an entire game, a time of your life and even the room you played in. It is a powerful kind of nostalgia

There are some obvious classics. The Super Mario Bros theme, the Tetris music and the Legend of Zelda overworld theme are recognised far beyond gaming. Final Fantasy, Halo, The Elder Scrolls and Chrono Trigger all have soundtracks that fans still listen to on their own. More recent games like Hollow Knight, Undertale, Celeste and Hades have their own devoted followings

Then there are the less famous tracks that mean something personal. A menu theme you heard hundreds of times, a level that took you ages to beat or a battle tune that still raises your heart rate. Some racing games had licensed soundtracks that introduced players to bands they still love today

Game music has grown into a big deal, with live orchestral concerts selling out around the world. Streaming services have entire playlists dedicated to game soundtracks. It is no longer just background noise

Question everything. Especially this.
