Valheim launches version 1.0 on September 9th, more than five years after entering Early Access in February 2021, bringing the Viking survival game's eighth and final biome, the Deep North, alongside its full release. The update is free for all 17 million existing owners, while the price for new purchases rises from 19.99 to 29.99 dollars starting at launch. The game also debuts on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time, joining PC, Xbox, Linux and Mac with full crossplay supported across every platform

The Deep North is an icy, increasingly dangerous landscape at the far north of the map, requiring full Mistlands tier gear just to survive, and adds new enemies including massive Gammeltrolls and Elakingar, underground dungeons, abandoned villages, a Nordic weapon line, a new large round shield, the Frostfire crossbow, and an unlimited use grappling hook. It also brings the game's final boss and story conclusion centered on a character called Hervor Bloodtooth, along with the game's first ever achievements and new cutscenes leading to the ending

Developer Iron Gate released a retrospective video called (Y)our Journey two days before launch, reflecting on five years of Early Access development, while confirming that all existing worlds and saves remain fully compatible with 1.0. Curious what people think about a five year Early Access journey ending this way, does Valheim's slow, steady development approach represent a model other survival games should follow, or did the extended wait test player patience too much along the way

17 million existing owners getting the entire 1.0 update completely free is genuinely generous, especially for a game that's clearly earned the right to charge for a proper full release given how much content shipped over five years
