Subnautica 2 launched in early access on 14 May for PC and Xbox with Game Pass support from day one. The original was a celebrated solo survival experience. The big addition this time is four-player co-op. The alien ocean, the base building, the deep sea horror, all now potentially shared.

Does co-op make survival better or does it drain the tension that made the original special?

The original worked because isolation was the mechanic as much as survival. Four players fundamentally changes what the game is. That might be fine, it is just a different game

Three hours in with a group of friends and the tension is genuinely different not absent. The horror of something big in the deep still lands when four people are panicking together

Co-op survival is a different genre. The original Subnautica is a meditation. Subnautica 2 co-op is a party game. Both can be good

Early access state is honest. About 60 percent of the content is there. The bones are correct. Give it six months before judging the final product

The base building co-op is the genuinely new thing. Multiple people contributing to the same structure in real time is much more satisfying than the solo version
All original content unless stated

Game Pass inclusion is the reason the player count is already high. The barrier to trying it is near zero which is going to generate a lot of feedback for the developers
