Totally

Same here. Happens to me all the time.

Proper useful that
Have you tried turning it off and on again?

codeberg

Completely agree, and it is frustrating that this is not more widely known. Happy to help further if you get stuck

Totally

That is pretty much it. Ha, fair enough. 8)

VB

Pretty much my experience. Worth a try if you get the chance. :D

QuoteIf you want a better Avataaars Generator - A free online avatar generator for anyone to make their beautiful

Agree completely, preparation is everything. Happy to answer questions if you get stuck

Jeffy

That was not my experience at all. Let me know what you think

TheGreatMoney

I am always wary when something sounds amazing at first glance. I have found that the biggest savings come from the boring stuff nobody wants to do.

Cheers for sharing that

StuckOnDestiny

I wonder if that is the whole story or just the most obvious part of it. There is a bit more nuance to it once you sit with it for a while.

There is a lot more to say about this

Jarvis

Not worth cutting corners on that part. Take your time with it and it will come out well

QuantumDay

Makes sense. Cheers

Eastern Aaron

Interesting, I had the opposite experience. Useful to know

The initial reporting on this was all over the place. This feels like one of those topics where the longer term effect matters more than the daily noise.

Worth watching closely

Courier53

Not sure I am fully with you on that one. Nice one
Long time lurker, first time poster

SpinState

I love my avatar ;D

alwaysPatrick19

I went down the rabbit hole of avatar generators last week and somehow spent two hours tweaking a tiny pixel character
It's ridiculous how addictive that stuff is

Ended up with something I still can't decide if I like or not, but at least nobody else has it

Honestly half the fun is just experimenting until something clicks

Estuary59

I got tired of hunting for avatars years ago and just made my own
It's way easier than scrolling through endless stock images that all look like they were made in 2009

You can use simple tools or even phone apps now, nothing fancy needed. Takes five minutes and you get something unique

Also weirdly people recognize you more when your avatar isn't from the default library, so it kind of helps build identity on the forum

Brittle Coder

Careful with grabbing avatars from random sites though
Some of those image packs get reused everywhere and you end up seeing your avatar on like five different accounts

That kind of kills the whole idea of having something unique

If you want something fresh, either customize it or look for communities that specifically share open art assets

BradBytheway

Not gonna lie, I kind of miss when forums had a shared culture of avatar packs
Everyone using variations of the same style made communities feel more connected

Now it's all random AI generated faces or ultra polished art that doesn't really match the vibe of old school forums

Maybe I'm just nostalgic, but sometimes simpler was better

BankHolidayBlues

I just use a photo of my dog as my avatar and call it a day
People always assume it's some deep symbolic choice but really I just didn't want to think about it

Honestly it works better than any fancy art I've tried before. It's recognizable and people remember it

Also it prevents anyone from taking my posts too seriously, which is a bonus on most forums

Arty Kayla

If you're asking where to find better ones, the real answer is "make them"
There are tons of free tools online that let you build avatars from scratch or remix existing designs

It's actually kind of fun once you get into it, like digital dress up for your online identity

Plus you avoid the issue of everyone else having the same image from the same site

Slay40

You'd be surprised how much avatars affect how people respond to you on forums
Same message, different avatar, totally different reactions sometimes

I tested it once with a blank icon versus a stylized one and the engagement difference was real

So yeah, it's not just cosmetic, it kind of shapes perception more than people admit
Posted from a machine that definitely needs a clean install

Tel86

Depends what kind of avatars you're after
Some forums have built in galleries but they're usually pretty generic and a bit outdated. If you want something more personal, you probably need to look outside the platform

A lot of people just use generated art or crop something from their own photos. Honestly that tends to stand out more than the default set anyway

If you want sites, check places like avatar generators or even gaming profile editors, they usually have more modern styles than forum defaults

Ben

Honestly avatars are one of those things people underestimate until they find a good set and suddenly their whole profile feels different. I went from default blob to something custom and it weirdly made me more active on forums.
There are a few sites with free packs but quality varies a lot. Some look like they were drawn on a toaster.
If you want better ones, you might need to dig into art communities or commission something small from an artist.

Ava

I feel like avatars are the online equivalent of shoes. Nobody notices them until they are really good or really terrible.
Half the time I click on a profile and think that avatar is doing more talking than the actual posts.
If you are asking where to find better ones, I would say look at illustration communities rather than generic icon sites.

GhostRider41

I never cared about avatars until someone pointed out mine looked like a placeholder from 2008. Since then I have been on a quiet mission to upgrade it.
There are some decent avatar generators out there but most of them end up feeling samey.
Honestly the best ones I have seen are still custom drawn ones from hobby artists.

HitmanMatt53

People always ask where to find better avatars but the real question is what makes a good one in the first place. Is it style, uniqueness, or just something that does not look blurry at small size.
I have seen amazing artwork that fails as an avatar because it becomes unreadable when scaled down.
So sometimes better just means simpler.
GG no re

Coder65

I am convinced avatars are secretly the most important part of online identity that nobody admits to caring about.
You recognize people faster by their little picture than by their username half the time.
If you want better ones, I would honestly start by browsing fandom art spaces, there is a lot of talent there.
Normal is overrated

StoneCold_99

Hot take but most avatar sites are just recycling the same tired designs. Pixel circle, anime face, gradient blob, repeat.
If you want something actually better you need to go slightly off the beaten path.
Even a basic sketch from a random artist feels more personal than most template packs.
Question everything. Especially this.

Finley

I went through a phase of changing avatars every week and it confused everyone. Apparently people rely on them more than I expected.
Now I stick to one but I still browse for new ones occasionally like I am shopping for a new identity.
There are some underrated collections on art platforms if you search by style rather than keyword.

CollapseState

Not gonna lie I miss when avatars were just chaotic. Everyone had weird low resolution images and nobody cared about branding.
Now everything feels too polished sometimes.
Still though, if you want better ones, there are tons of free packs on open art repositories if you dig.

Frost Gary

I think the problem with most avatar searches is people look for generic terms and end up with generic results.
If you search for specific aesthetics like watercolor, retro sci fi, or minimal line art, you get much better stuff.
It is less about where and more about how you search.

VoidSentinel

I tried making my own avatar once and it looked like a confused potato. After that I gained a new respect for people who can actually design something readable at small sizes.
There are tools that help now but they still need a bit of taste behind them.
Maybe commissioning is the easiest path if you want something truly unique.
Somewhere between inspired and overwhelmed

Seb5

Avatars are funny because they are tiny but somehow carry a lot of personality. You can tell a lot about a forum culture just by scrolling through them.
Some places are all serious icons, others are pure chaos.
If you want better ones, think about what vibe you want first.

Violet_47

I will say this, better avatars are not always about art quality. Sometimes the funniest or simplest ones stand out way more than detailed illustrations.
I still remember a forum where someone used a badly cropped sandwich and it became iconic.
So do not overthink it too much.
COYB — you know who you are

Canopy

If you are struggling to find good avatars, try looking at game modding communities. They often have massive libraries of icons and character portraits.
Some are high quality, some are weird, but there is variety.
You just have to filter a bit.

Karen88

There is also something to be said for consistency. A good avatar is one you stick with long enough that people associate it with you.
Constantly changing it kind of defeats the purpose.
So maybe the search for better ones is also a search for the one you will not replace.

Lucky Dean

I think people underestimate how much cropping matters. A beautiful image can turn into unreadable noise if it is not framed properly.
That is why a lot of professional looking avatars are actually simple compositions.
So better does not always mean more detailed.

Daresh84

Honestly I just pick something that makes me smile when I see it. If it does that job, it is good enough.
I have seen people spend hours debating avatar aesthetics and I am just here like it is a tiny picture next to my name.
Still, I get the appeal of wanting a nicer one.

ParallelSelf90

There are whole communities dedicated to icon packs and avatar sets but they are surprisingly hard to stumble upon unless you already know where to look.
Once you find them though it is a rabbit hole.
You end up downloading way more than you will ever use.

BrittleQuarry

I think the real upgrade path is learning basic editing. Even cropping and adjusting contrast can turn a decent image into a great avatar.
You do not always need a new source, just a tweak.
People sleep on simple edits.

NeonPhantom

Sometimes I think avatars are like online fingerprints. You might not notice them consciously but your brain remembers them.
That is why changing them feels like changing identity a bit.
So choosing a better one is kind of a bigger deal than it sounds.
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)

Louise5

If all else fails just ask an artist friend. Most of them can knock out a quick avatar sketch in no time and it will look better than anything generated.
Plus it has personality baked in.
Hard to beat that level of uniqueness.

StoneCold

I actually enjoy the hunt for avatars more than the result sometimes. It is like browsing for a tiny piece of yourself that fits the space.
You scroll forever and then suddenly one just clicks.
That is probably why people keep asking where to find better ones.
