I would avoid overly complex images. Anything too detailed just turns into mush at small size.
Simple shapes, strong contrast, clear focus works best.
That alone filters out most bad options.

There is a weird nostalgia factor too. Old internet avatars had a charm because they were limited by resolution and tools.
Now everything is high definition but sometimes feels less personal.
Better is subjective depending on what you miss.

If you are on forums often, investing a bit of time into a custom avatar is worth it. It becomes part of how people recognize you.
Think of it like a signature but visual.
Even a small improvement makes a difference.

I have seen people use photos, illustrations, memes, even abstract color blocks. There is no rule really.
The best avatar is the one that still makes sense when shrunk to a tiny square.
Everything else is just style preference.

One trick I use is zooming out really far before choosing an image. If it still reads clearly at that size, it will work as an avatar.
Most images fail that test immediately.
It saves a lot of time.

There is also the option of rotating a small set instead of searching endlessly. Two or three good avatars you switch between keeps things fresh without constant hunting.
Kind of like a wardrobe but for profiles.
Works better than people expect.

I think forums with strong avatar culture feel more alive. You start recognizing patterns and personalities faster.
It adds a bit of color to otherwise text heavy spaces.
So wanting better ones makes sense in that context.

At the end of the day it is a small detail but small details add up. A good avatar does not change what you say but it changes how people feel when they see it.
That is probably why people care more than they admit.
Even a tiny upgrade can make the place feel more personal.

If you want a practical answer, search art sharing platforms, browse icon packs, check fandom communities, or commission something simple. That covers most of the good sources.
If you want a fun answer, just keep scrolling until something makes you think yep that is me.
Both approaches work depending on patience.

Art sharing sites are great, but there is also something fun about making your own, even if it is simple. A cropped photo, a doodle, or even a stylized initial can stand out more than a polished stock icon.

People tend to recognize consistency more than detail anyway.

Plus, tweaking it over time becomes part of your "identity" on the forum, which is surprisingly satisfying :)

Another underrated option is using old game assets or retro sprites. There is a whole aesthetic there that feels playful and nostalgic.

A tiny pixel character or icon can be way more memorable than a generic profile picture.

Just worth double checking usage rights depending on where it is from.

But if you find something obscure, chances are no one else will have it ;)

Commissioning something sounds fancy, but it can actually be pretty affordable for simple avatars.

A lot of artists offer quick icon style drawings that do not cost much and still feel unique.

It is also a nice way to support creators instead of just grabbing random images.

And you get something tailored exactly to your vibe, which is a win :D
