DIY Project Update Thread - How Is Everyone Getting On

[Depot76]

Following on from the summer project thread a few weeks ago: how is it going? This is the check-in thread for anyone who posted what they were planning to tackle and wants to update the community, or who is starting something new and wants to share.

Progress reports, setbacks, things that turned out harder than expected, things that turned out easier, specific questions if you have them.

The raised beds are built and planted. The courgettes are already trying to take over. The tomatoes are looking promising. Everything I planted that was supposed to be easy is doing well and everything that was supposed to be straightforward is not

Exterior woodwork repainting update: four weeks in and about 60 percent done. The painting is actually pleasant. It is the prep work that is never over. Always another section that needs sanding before you can get paint on it

The garage workbench is complete and has transformed the space. The difference between having a proper surface to work on and making do is larger than I expected. Everything subsequent will be easier

The sourdough starter is alive and has been named Ferdinand. First loaf this weekend. Results were mixed but edible and the second attempt is already planned

[Donna]

Loft conversion planning permission came back approved. Now the actual decision about whether to spend the money and manage a three month project begins. The approval felt like the end of something and it turns out it was the beginning

The bathroom tiling is complete. Took twice as long as I estimated and involved one complete re-do of a corner that I got wrong. The final result is better than I expected and I will not do it again for at least a decade

[Myles]

Bought the tools for the fence repair project and discovered on inspection that the fence needs replacement not repair. This is always how it goes. The honest assessment is never the optimistic assessment

The damp issue in the cellar: it was the drainage channel outside being blocked. Cleared it. Tested it. The damp has stopped. Sometimes the answer is simple and that is the best version of any DIY problem
