I am more interested in things people here have actually tried.

Real answers from people here are usually more useful than search results.

If it matters, I am not in a rush on this - I would rather get it right than get it done quickly.

The practical reality is usually somewhere between the optimistic recommendation and the pessimistic warning.

Has anyone here actually tried it?

Found a decent iPhone deal through a trade-in offer recently. The discount was not some unbelievable headline number, but combining the trade-in value with a seasonal promotion brought the upgrade cost down quite a bit.

The main thing was checking the trade-in terms carefully. A scratched phone or missing accessories can change the final value, so it is worth reading the small print. :)
Never pay full price. Never.

Refurbished iPhones are where some of the better savings seem to be. Picked up a previous generation model in excellent condition and the difference compared with buying new was significant.

Would still recommend buying from somewhere with a proper warranty though. Saving money is great, but not if the phone arrives with battery problems.

The best iPhone bargain I've seen lately was not the newest model. The previous generation dropped in price and was still more than powerful enough for everyday use.

People get caught up chasing the latest camera improvements, but a one-year-old iPhone is usually still a very capable device. 8)

Would be careful with marketplace deals that look too good to be true. There are plenty of genuine bargains, but iPhones are also one of the most copied and misrepresented devices around.

Checking the serial information, battery health, and activation lock status takes a few minutes and can prevent a very expensive mistake. :-[

Accessory bundles can be worth looking at too. Some retailers throw in cases, chargers, or screen protectors with iPhone purchases, and those extras add up.

A phone deal that saves fifty pounds but forces you to immediately buy everything separately is not always the winner. ;)

Carrier deals can be surprisingly good if you were already planning to stay with the same network. Some offers reduce the monthly cost or include trade-in credits that make newer models much easier to justify.

The catch is making sure the contract is actually cheaper overall. A big discount can disappear if the plan price jumps.

Managed to find a good deal on an older iPhone as a spare phone. It was mainly for travel, so paying flagship money made no sense.

Battery health was the thing I checked first. A cheap phone with a worn-out battery is not much of a bargain.

The boring answer is usually waiting for the right timing. Prices often improve around new model launches because older versions get discounted.

A lot of people rush on release day, then a few months later the same phone has better offers available. Patience can be the cheapest upgrade trick. :D
Undefeated, unless you count every practice match
