A quick honesty audit of the rectangle in your pocket. Name the app you use the MOST, measured by actual time or opens rather than what you would like to admit, and then name your FAVOURITE app, the one you are genuinely glad exists, and let us examine the gap between those two answers because it is usually a canyon

The pattern in threads like this is bleak and funny, the most used is almost always something engineered to be bottomless that we would not describe as a favourite or even a positive, while the favourite is often a small quiet tool that does one job beautifully and asks nothing of us

The interesting bit is what you would do about the gap if you were honest, whether the most used app earns its place or just wins by engineered default, and whether your actual favourite gets a fraction of the attention it deserves because it does not fight for it

So post both, the time thief and the true love, and the optional third question, if you could only keep FIVE apps forever which survive, because that list tends to look nothing like your actual usage and everything like your actual values
Coffee first. Questions later.

FrostDrifter

Most used is the obvious bottomless feed, favourite is a tiny app that identifies birdsong through the microphone, the gap between those two is basically a diagnosis of modern life

IronWarden

The birdsong app appears in every one of these threads and it deserves to, it is the anti feed, quiet, useful, asks nothing, gives wonder
Works on my quantum machine :D

Forge45

Most used a scrolling app I would describe as an enemy, favourite my library ebook app, the tool I love loses to the tool that is designed to win, every single day

Odd Maverick

Designed to win is the whole thing, favourites do not fight for your time and the time thieves are engineered by hundreds of people to never let go, it was never a fair contest

Five to keep forever and none of them are my top used, messaging, maps, banking, library books, and the podcast one, the feeds do not make the ark and that tells me everything

Client Wrench

The five keeper list being nothing like usage is the most damning stat in the thread, we spend our time on apps we would not save from the fire

TheGame92

Favourite is a note app that has held my brain for years, most used is the same feed as everyone else, I am nothing if not a representative sample of the problem

Python35

Weather and a train times app are secretly my most valued, deeply boring, save my day constantly, never once tried to keep me scrolling, boring utility is underrated love

Idle Mila

Deleted my most used app for a month after a thread like this last year, life measurably improved, reinstalled it anyway because everyone I know is trapped in it, the trap is social not personal

Woven Sasha

The trap is social is the honest ending, half of us stay in the time thief apps because leaving means leaving people, not because we like the app, that is the actual design masterstroke
