Microsoft is changing how OneDrive storage works in Microsoft 365 Family and Premium, Android Authority reports. At the moment, each of up to six people gets their own 1TB, for a combined 6TB. Under the new rules, everyone shares a single 2TB pool. Microsoft announced the change in a support post

The impact depends a lot on how you use it. People on their own gain, going from 1TB to 2TB of personal space. Families who use only a little storage will barely notice. But a family of six who have filled their space would be about 4TB over the new limit

Those heavy users would have to delete files, move them elsewhere or pay for more storage. The old trick of adding spare family accounts just to get extra space will also stop working. Android Authority admits there is no sugarcoating it, as the change has more negatives than positives for many families. It does point out that there is time to plan

The timing gives people breathing room. The change applies now to new subscribers. Existing customers get it at their first renewal on or after 2 May 2027. That is more than six months away

Cloud storage prices are under pressure across the industry, partly because data centres are expensive and demand is rising. Families who rely heavily on OneDrive should check their usage now. Alternatives include Google One, iCloud and keeping local backups on an external drive. A mix of cloud and local storage is often the most cost effective approach anyway

How much of your Microsoft 365 storage do you use? And will this change make you switch to another service?
