I take a lot of photos and find it hard to cull my library. I keep photos that are slightly blurry or badly exposed but delete technically perfect ones. I am trying to understand what I am actually responding to when I make those decisions.

Looking for honest takes from people who shoot seriously

You are keeping moments and deleting records. A blurry photo of a real expression is a photograph. A sharp photo of someone staring at a camera is documentation. Different things

The decisive moment idea from Cartier-Bresson is what you are instinctively applying. The fraction of a second where everything in a frame is as right as it will ever be. Technical quality is secondary to whether you caught that moment

I use a simple test: does this photo say something that no other photo in the set says. If a technically better frame captures the same moment the worse technical one gets deleted. If it captures something unique it stays regardless of quality

The delete reflex for technically perfect but empty photos is your aesthetic sense working correctly. Perfect exposure and sharp focus are table stakes not the point

Emotional response is the practical filter. If looking at a photo produces no emotional response delete it regardless of technical quality. If it produces any response keep it and evaluate further

The challenge is distinguishing genuine emotional response from sentimental attachment. A blurry photo of someone you miss feels significant. Whether it is genuinely a good photograph is a different question

Give yourself the rule: keep nothing for technical reasons alone. Technical quality earns the photo a second look. It does not earn it a place in the final edit
