Consider this: does a photo need to be technically perfect to actually be good?

[Slate Mike]

Genuinely curious where people land on this. Some of the most memorable photos in history are technically flawed, blurry, poorly exposed, oddly framed, yet still hit harder emotionally than a perfectly composed, sharp shot of something forgettable

[TheRock96]

Technical skill gets you competent, timing and emotion get you memorable, those are honestly two different skill sets entirely

[Ryan98]

A slightly blurry photo of a real, unguarded moment beats a perfectly sharp posed shot every time for me personally

[SharpLantern]

I think technical skill matters more the bigger you print or display something, on a phone screen most flaws barely register anyway

[Ben55]

Some of my favorite photos I've ever taken are objectively badly exposed, doesn't change how much they mean to me looking back

[Lewis_43]

Depends what the photo is for honestly, a product shot needs technical precision, a candid family photo needs the moment way more

[Sandra_29]

This is basically the eternal debate between craft and feeling, and I don't think there's a single right answer, just different priorities

[Callum28]

No some of my best ones are when they weren't looking at the camera

[Courtois75]

Technical perfection is a tool, not the destination. A perfectly sharp photo with no emotional connection can be forgotten in seconds, while a blurry image of a meaningful moment can stay with someone for years.

That said, I think people sometimes use "imperfection" as an excuse when they have not learned the basics yet. Knowing how exposure, focus, and composition work gives you the ability to break those rules intentionally rather than accidentally.

[Odd Arrow]

This is such an interesting question because photography has always had a strange relationship with mistakes. A light leak used to mean something went wrong, and now people add them digitally because they like the feeling it creates.

The context matters a lot too. A blurry street photo might feel alive and spontaneous, while the same blur in a product photo probably just looks like a mistake. The purpose changes how we judge it.

[FridayFeeling]

Some of my favourite images are the ones where the photographer clearly reacted faster than they could think. The framing is slightly off, the subject is not perfectly centered, but there is a sense that the camera caught a real moment.

Sometimes chasing technical perfection can make people hesitate too much. By the time everything is adjusted, the moment has already disappeared

[Mason0]

There is definitely a difference between a technically flawed photo and a poorly made photo. A photographer can choose a dark exposure or unusual framing for artistic reasons, but that does not mean every accidental mistake becomes art.

The intent behind the image is what makes the difference. A mistake that supports the story is interesting. A mistake that distracts from the story usually is not.

The old argument reminds me of music. A singer does not have to hit every note perfectly for a performance to feel powerful. Sometimes the tiny cracks are what make it human.

Photography works the same way. A technically clean image can still feel empty if there is no emotion behind it.

[Woven Sarah]

There is a famous idea that the best camera is the one you have with you, and I think that applies here. Some of the most memorable photos happened because someone captured something important rather than waiting for perfect conditions.

Still, I would not dismiss technique. Understanding your equipment gives you more options when those unexpected moments appear.

[DeanAmbrose]

The rise of phone photography has made this debate even more interesting. People now have cameras everywhere, but the difference between a random snapshot and a great image is still usually the photographer's eye.

A phone photo with bad lighting can sometimes beat a high-end camera shot because the person behind it noticed something worth capturing.

[Taker]

There is a danger of overcorrecting in the other direction too. Some photographers hear that rules can be broken and then intentionally make everything messy because they think it automatically feels artistic.

The strongest photographers usually know the rules first. They break them because they understand what the choice adds, not just because they want something different.

[WarpField69]

The funny thing is that some flaws become part of a photograph's identity over time. A certain grain, colour shift, or unusual crop can make an image instantly recognisable.

The challenge is figuring out whether the flaw is helping the image or just getting in the way. That judgement is where the photographer's skill really shows.

[Anvil33]

A sharp image is satisfying, but sharpness is only one piece of the puzzle. Some photographers become so focused on lenses and settings that they forget photography is about seeing.

A person with a great eye and a basic camera can create something memorable. A person with expensive gear and no sense of timing can create a very expensive collection of average photos.

[Marnie80]

A photograph is communication first and a technical exercise second. If the viewer feels something, remembers something, or sees a perspective they had not considered before, that is already a success.

The technical side matters because it helps deliver that message, but it is not the message itself. A perfectly exposed empty scene is still an empty scene.

[John70]

The phrase "technically perfect" is tricky because perfection changes depending on the style. A wildlife photographer might want extreme sharpness, while a documentary photographer might value atmosphere over detail.

Photography has too many genres for one set of rules to work everywhere. The image has to serve its purpose.

[UniversalBarry38]

A little imperfection can create personality. A perfectly clean studio portrait might be beautiful, but a slightly awkward family photo from years ago can carry much more emotional weight.

That said, there is a difference between nostalgia and artistic quality. A photo can be important to someone without necessarily being a strong photograph from a craft perspective.

[RedKnight]

There is a place for both approaches. Commercial photography often needs technical consistency because clients have specific expectations. Fine art and documentary photography have much more freedom to explore imperfections.

It would be boring if every photographer chased the exact same polished look. The interesting work usually comes from people finding their own visual language.

[Backprop Python]

This topic always makes me think about old family photos. Half of them are blurry, poorly framed, or have terrible colours, but they are priceless because they preserve moments that can never happen again.

Maybe that is the difference between a photo being valuable and a photo being impressive. Those are not always the same thing
