More than 20 companies including Nvidia, Microsoft, Meta, Palantir, IBM, Hugging Face, Mistral and Y Combinator signed a joint open letter urging US policymakers to avoid broad restrictions on open weight AI models, arguing that models whose weights can be downloaded, inspected and run on private infrastructure are essential to American technological leadership. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang amplified the letter, writing that open models strengthen safety and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and enable sovereignty

The letter arrives as the Trump administration reportedly considers restrictions on Chinese open weight models following the White House's accusation that Moonshot AI distilled Anthropic's Fable model to build its own Kimi K3. Notably absent from the signatory list are OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind, the three companies most associated with closed frontier models, whose business models depend more heavily on charging for API access to systems that cannot simply be downloaded and run for free

So here is the actual question worth debating, is this split just naked self interest on both sides, infrastructure and open model companies benefiting from commoditized, freely available models while closed lab companies benefit from restrictions that protect their proprietary advantage, or is there a genuine principled disagreement here about what actually keeps America safer and more competitive in AI. Both sides clearly have a financial stake in their own position, but that does not automatically mean either one is wrong

Pretty transparently self interested on both sides honestly, infrastructure companies want commoditized models because it drives hardware demand, closed labs want protection because it protects their moat

That said self interest does not automatically make the open letter's actual argument wrong, more open models diffusing into more sectors is a reasonable case on its own merits

The timing right after the Fable distillation accusation is what makes this letter read almost like a preemptive strike against a ban specifically targeting Chinese open models
