Large AI models, backups, media files and project archives can eat storage faster than expected. That is where a proper NAS starts to look less like a luxury and more like infrastructure. I have been looking at systems like Synology 4-Bay DiskStation DS923+ (Diskless) because central storage, snapshots and remote access all sound useful, but once you add drives the total cost gets serious very quickly

A NAS feels expensive until the day a drive dies and your backup plan actually works
Cashback on everything or it didn't happen

For AI models it makes sense, but only if the network is fast enough. Slow storage ruins the whole experience

I bought one for media and ended up using it for everything. It became boring in the best way
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)

The hidden cost is the drives. The NAS box is only the beginning of the bill

The danger with NAS systems is that they quietly become hobbies instead of tools. Someone buys one for backups, then suddenly they are researching enterprise drives at 2 AM and arguing online about filesystem choices.

I say this as someone currently running far more storage than any sane person probably needs
Question everything. Especially this.

For AI workflows they actually make a lot of sense though. Models, datasets and generated content become painful to manage across random drives very quickly.

Centralised storage with proper access control and backups starts feeling less like luxury and more like basic organisation

I think many people underestimate how psychologically comforting reliable storage can be.

Knowing your projects, archives and backups exist safely in multiple places removes a weird low level anxiety that many tech people do not even realise they are carrying
