Rhea Ripley is out of SummerSlam, so WWE is crowning an interim Women's Champion in a five woman ladder match

[TrainingRun Anvil]

WWE confirmed ahead of Friday's SmackDown that Rhea Ripley will not be medically cleared to defend her Women's Championship at SummerSlam, after suffering a torn meniscus during her title defense against Jade Cargill at Clash in Italy back on May 31. Rather than stripping Ripley of the title outright, WWE is keeping her recognized as the official champion while a separate interim champion gets crowned to fill the void at the two night event on August 1 and 2 in Minneapolis

Adam Pearce, serving as both Raw General Manager and interim SmackDown General Manager, made the announcement in a pre-show video, explaining that Ripley has been working hard with WWE's medical team and is getting close to returning, just not close enough to make SummerSlam specifically. Ripley herself described the injury as being in an awkward spot, saying she couldn't bend her knee properly or squat without pain, which made her recovery timeline harder to predict than a more straightforward injury

Five women will battle across qualifying matches over the next two weeks to earn a spot in the ladder match itself, with whoever climbs to grab the belt walking out as interim champion and defending it until Ripley is actually cleared to return. At that point the two champions will face off in a unification match to determine one undisputed titleholder, giving WWE a natural, built in blowoff match once Ripley's knee is finally ready. The July 17 SmackDown already kicked off the qualifying picture, with Tiffany Stratton beating Jacy Jayne to become the first woman locked into the ladder match, and Jade Cargill securing her own spot via disqualification after Charlotte Flair interfered in her match against Nia Jax

It's a fairly clean bit of championship booking, giving SummerSlam a genuine new title change to build around without permanently taking anything away from a champion who's still recovering from a real injury, while setting up an eventual unification match that gives whoever wins the interim belt a clear, meaningful next step once Ripley is finally back in the ring

Keeping Ripley recognized as champion instead of just vacating the title outright is the right call, feels a lot more respectful to an injured champion than the usual stripped of the title storyline

[Solid Gary]

A ladder match specifically for an interim title is a fun stipulation, higher risk than a normal singles match and gives the whole thing a bigger fight feel for what's essentially a placeholder championship

[Fraction]

The built in unification match once Ripley returns is smart long term planning, gives the eventual interim champion a clear job to do rather than just sitting on a title with no direction

[Foundry69]

Tiffany Stratton already punching her ticket in makes sense given how hot she's been booked lately, curious who else rounds out the final field over the next two weeks

[Taker92]

The Charlotte Flair interference giving Cargill a DQ win into the match is a nice subtle way to keep an ongoing storyline thread alive while still advancing the actual title picture

[Amy]

Knee injuries in an awkward spot like Ripley described really can be unpredictable to recover from, hope this gives her the actual time she needs rather than rushing back too early

[Amber99]

The ladder match idea actually makes a lot of sense here. Losing Rhea is a huge blow because she has been one of the biggest attractions in the division, but at least they are not just handing the title to someone randomly.

A five woman ladder match creates a big moment where someone can establish themselves. The risk is that the winner gets compared to Rhea immediately, which is a tough standard to meet.

The eventual unification match should help avoid the interim title feeling meaningless

[Cole_25]

Not having Rhea at SummerSlam is disappointing, but injuries happen. The important thing is protecting her long term rather than rushing her back for one event.

The interim champion angle is probably the cleanest solution. It gives the other women something important to fight for instead of just filling a gap.

Hopefully the winner gets a proper reign and is not treated like they are just borrowing the belt.

[PlanckLimit36]

The ladder match could be either amazing or complete chaos. Five talented wrestlers climbing over each other sounds like a recipe for some memorable spots.

The interesting question is who benefits most from winning. Someone like a rising star could use this as the moment where fans start seeing them differently.

A championship win at SummerSlam carries a lot more weight than a normal episode title change.

[Sandworm]

Some people are acting like the interim title is a bad idea, but I think it is better than freezing the division. A champion being unavailable for months can leave everyone else with nothing meaningful to chase.

The key is making sure the eventual match with Rhea feels like a major attraction.

If they handle the storytelling properly, this could actually make the division stronger.

[RomanReigns96]

Rhea being out hurts because she has that rare ability to make a match feel important just by walking into the arena. Not many people on the roster have that presence.

That said, this is also the kind of situation where a new star can appear. Wrestling has plenty of examples where someone got a chance because another performer was unavailable.

The ladder match winner could come out looking like a real main event player

[Vanessa26]

The unification match is the part that makes this work for me. Without that, an interim championship can sometimes feel like a consolation prize.

With a clear future match waiting, the winner has a reason to prove they belong.

Now the pressure is on WWE to make the interim champion matter instead of just being a placeholder.

[Elk31]

Five women in a ladder match is going to be wild. Those matches always create moments that people remember, although sometimes they also create moments where everyone watching covers their eyes

The best outcome would be someone winning who has not already reached their ceiling.

A surprise winner could give the division a fresh direction while Rhea recovers.

[Oscar_38]

Sad to see Rhea miss such a big event because she has been one of the strongest booked champions in recent years.

Still, protecting an injured wrestler should always come first. A rushed return could turn a temporary problem into a much bigger one.

The division has enough talent to carry things for a while.

[Teal Shannon]

I actually like the idea more than a standard number one contender match. A ladder match feels like a special occasion and fits the circumstances.

Everyone involved has a reason to take risks because the reward is huge.

The only concern is making sure the match does not become more about dangerous spots than the championship itself.

[CosmicRay40]

The timing is unfortunate, but this might be one of those situations where the setback creates an opportunity. Someone who has been waiting in the background now gets a chance under the brightest lights.

Championship opportunities do not come around equally in wrestling.

A good performance here could change someone's entire career.

[Jedi Poppy]

The biggest challenge is the comparison problem. Whoever wins will immediately have people saying they are not Rhea, which is unfair because every champion has a different role.

The new champion should be allowed to create their own identity.

Replacing a star and building something new are two completely different things.

[WaveFunction34]

Would not be surprised if the ladder match produces a breakout performance from someone unexpected. That happens a lot with multi-person matches because the focus shifts around.

The obvious favourites are usually not always the ones who leave with the biggest reaction.

Sometimes one great sequence changes how fans see a wrestler.

[Ridge]

The only thing I would avoid is making the winner look weak against Rhea later. The interim champion needs credibility before the unification match happens.

Otherwise fans will just see the whole thing as a countdown to Rhea returning.

Give the winner a few strong moments and let them feel like a real champion.

[Cosmos Wrench]

Not everyone will agree with an interim championship, but I think it keeps momentum going. Fans complain when titles are held up and complain when they create replacements too, so there is no perfect answer

At least this gives the division something meaningful during the absence.

Now they just need to make the matches count.

[Calm Charlotte]

I am curious whether they go with an obvious choice or use this as a chance for a surprise. WWE has a history of big events changing how fans view someone.

A wrestler can go from being part of the roster to feeling like a true contender overnight.

Hopefully whoever wins takes advantage of the opportunity

[Kieran88]

Rhea's injury reminds everyone how much wrestling depends on timing. One person being unavailable can completely change months of planning.

The positive is that the company has a built-in story waiting when she returns.

That is much better than pretending nothing happened.

[Kane44]

People forget that interim champions can have great runs. It depends entirely on the booking after the win.

If the story becomes "this person is just waiting for Rhea," then it fails.

If the story becomes "this person proved they deserve to stand across from Rhea," then it works.

[AlexandrZakharyan]

The frustrating part is missing Rhea versus whoever was originally planned, because those big matches are why people buy into premium events.

However, injuries are part of the business. The smart move is making the replacement story as strong as possible.

A great interim reign can turn a negative situation into a positive one.

[Di87]

The winner needs to come out of this looking like they earned it, not like they found a vacant seat. Ladder matches can do that because surviving one already feels like an achievement.

Then when Rhea returns, it becomes champion versus champion rather than star versus substitute.

That is a much better setup.

[Voyager43]

Watching someone climb that ladder knowing they could become champion at SummerSlam is a pretty simple but effective concept.

Sometimes wrestling gets overly complicated with twists when the basic stakes already work.

A title opportunity, a big event, and a group of hungry competitors is enough.

[ParallelSelf90]

The return match with Rhea could actually be bigger because of this. If the interim champion has a strong run, there will be a proper question of whether Rhea can immediately reclaim her spot.

That creates tension instead of just a predictable reunion.

Good wrestling stories need uncertainty.

[StuckOnDestiny]

Rhea being unavailable is a shame, but WWE has handled similar situations before. Sometimes the best stories come from unexpected changes.

The roster needs chances like this because you cannot build new stars without giving them pressure situations.

A SummerSlam ladder match is about as much pressure as you can get.

[Benzema]

Five women is a good number for this kind of match. Enough people for variety, but not so many that half the participants disappear for twenty minutes.

The personalities involved will matter as much as the action.

A great ladder match needs a reason to care about who grabs the title.
