New reporting suggests WWE management actually wanted to keep Ilja Dragunov rather than release him, contradicting the assumption most fans made when his departure was first announced. According to a post from the account False Finish, WWE would have liked Dragunov to stay with the company, but he was the one who chose to let his own contract quietly expire instead.

Wrestling Observer's Bryan Alvarez followed up on that claim by saying Ilja and WWE were reportedly in strong negotiations about a return as recently as June, and False Finish corroborated that further by saying WWE was specifically planning to bring him back to television after SummerSlam. Obviously that never actually happened, and his contract has since lapsed with no new deal in place.

Dragunov had not wrestled for WWE or really appeared on television at all since April, which in hindsight lines up with reports of ongoing behind the scenes negotiations rather than him simply being phased out creatively. At 32 years old he still has plenty of good wrestling years left ahead of him, and he is exactly the kind of hard hitting, high intensity worker that tends to get talked about as a great fit for AEW specifically.

There are already rumors swirling that he could end up on AEW television relatively soon, though right now that is entirely speculation rather than anything confirmed by either promotion. Given how well his intense in ring style has translated to crowd reactions over the years, it genuinely would not be a shock to see him tearing it up on Dynamite or Collision before too long.

The overall picture that is emerging here is less a story about WWE cutting ties and more one about a talented free agent choosing to test the market on his own terms

This completely flips the initial narrative on its head and honestly makes a lot more sense than the original assumption that WWE simply gave up on him. Dragunov has always felt like a guy with genuine main roster upside, so quietly choosing to let him go never quite added up in the first place.
