The modern era of professional wrestling, spanning the last decade or so across WWE, AEW and New Japan Pro Wrestling, has produced a genuine golden age of in ring quality, with three names consistently mentioned above all others when the conversation turns to pure wrestling ability. Kenny Omega built a reputation as the self styled Best Bout Machine, delivering a run of critically acclaimed matches in New Japan before helping found AEW and continuing to produce widely praised bouts across multiple different styles and opponents, earning a reputation for genuinely elevating the standard of what a modern main event match is expected to look like.

AJ Styles, known as the Phenomenal One, built his own legacy across TNA, New Japan and eventually WWE, becoming a former IWGP Heavyweight Champion and multiple time WWE Champion whose combination of athleticism, technical ability and longevity across three completely different major promotions gives him a genuinely unique resume compared to almost anyone else currently working.

Kazuchika Okada, meanwhile, became the ace of New Japan Pro Wrestling, holding the IWGP Heavyweight title for a record breaking reign and headlining a string of Tokyo Dome main events, including a celebrated series of matches against Omega himself that are still regularly cited among the greatest professional wrestling matches ever produced anywhere in the world.

Three genuinely elite in ring performers who have all worked with and against each other across their careers. Which one actually deserves the title of the modern era's best pure worker?

Okada for me purely on that record breaking IWGP title reign and the sheer number of Tokyo Dome main events he has actually headlined. Being the ace of the biggest promotion in Japan for that long is its own separate mark of greatness.

Omega and Okada's series of matches against each other are genuinely some of the best professional wrestling ever filmed anywhere in the world, and Omega's willingness to constantly reinvent his style across different promotions edges it for me.

Styles has probably had to adapt his style the most out of the three given how different WWE's presentation is compared to New Japan or TNA, and he has still remained a consistently great worker across all of it.

Omega bringing that New Japan main event quality directly into building AEW from scratch shows an influence on the modern business that goes beyond just his own personal in ring output.

This is one of the rare GOAT arguments where all three men have genuinely wrestled each other at a world class level, which makes it feel like a much more resolvable debate than most other cross era comparisons in wrestling usually are.

Okada's matches can run a little long for some tastes but the sheer drama he builds across a thirty minute main event is a genuinely different skill set to the more rapid fire style a lot of Western wrestling favours

Styles working at an elite level across three completely different major promotions, TNA, New Japan and WWE, is a level of adaptability neither Omega nor Okada have really had to demonstrate across quite that many different environments
