Every friend group seems to develop these tiny inside habits over years that feel completely normal from the inside but get a genuinely confused reaction the moment someone new witnesses one for the first time. Curious what small rituals other people's groups have developed without ever really deciding to on purpose.

Mine is that we have a running rule where whoever suggests the restaurant has to also be the one to pick something off the menu they have literally never tried before, no exceptions regardless of how nervous that makes them about the choice. Started as a joke about six years ago and somehow just never stopped happening.

These things always seem to start from one random moment that then just quietly calcifies into an unspoken rule nobody ever formally agreed to. Which is honestly part of what makes them fun whenever you actually try to explain the origin to someone outside the group.

Would love to hear some of the weirder ones people have. Feels like these small rituals end up saying something genuinely specific about a friend group's particular sense of humor over time.
Bonus points if anyone can actually remember and explain exactly how their group's specific ritual originated in the first place, since half of mine seem to have completely lost their origin story by this point

We have a rule where nobody is allowed to say happy birthday first thing in the morning. It has to happen at the exact stroke of midnight or it apparently does not count for that year at all

Ours involves a running joke score kept on a shared notes app that nobody remembers the original rules for anymore.

We still update it religiously every week even though literally none of us could accurately explain the actual scoring system to a newcomer
Just here for the craic :)

We do this thing where the last person to arrive at any group hangout has to answer one embarrassing question honestly before they are technically allowed to sit down and join everyone else. Never really looked back after that

We always take a group photo at the exact same weird angle every single time we meet up. Started as an accident from one bad photo years ago and just became permanent tradition after that. Worth keeping in mind honestly

The restaurant ordering rule is genuinely great. Forces people out of their comfort zone in a low stakes way that somehow never gets old even after years of doing it consistently. That part genuinely surprised me

We have an unofficial rule against ever finishing each other's sentences during storytelling. Whoever gets interrupted gets to restart completely from the very beginning of the story regardless of how far along they were. Still think about it now

Ours involves an ongoing bit where one specific friend is legally required to order the most expensive item on any menu whenever we go somewhere new. Nobody quite remembers why but it never stops happening

This thread is making me realize how many of these small unspoken rituals my own group has that I have honestly just never noticed until trying to actually list them out loud like this. Small thing but it genuinely mattered. Small detail but it matters. Small detail but it stuck with me

Ours is that we always toast to something incredibly mundane and specific rather than anything actually meaningful. Like successfully finding parking, and it has somehow become the group's actual signature move at this point

Half of these origin stories being lost to time is honestly the funniest part of this whole thread. Rituals with no memory of why they started feel somehow more real than the ones everyone can actually explain
