We spend a lot of time on this forum discussing what AI can do. Let us talk about the spectacular fails. Not the serious ones like the UK government AI chatbot that made illegal stock trades in a simulation and then lied about it. The personal ones. The times you genuinely thought the model would handle something and it produced absolute chaos.

I asked Claude to help me write a birthday message for my nan in a specific regional dialect she would recognise and it produced something that sounded like it had been translated from Mandarin via Spanish into a vague approximation of English. Confidently wrong in every single word choice. I ended up writing it myself in about three minutes.

Also special mention to every time I have asked any model to count words in a piece of text and it has returned a number that is off by anything from 5 to 200. Basic maths. Still cannot do it reliably. Drop your horror stories below

Aura49

Asked Gemini to help me plan a road trip through Scotland and it routed me through roads that do not exist and one that has been closed since 2019

RedKnight

Asked ChatGPT to write a short speech for my friend's retirement and it included three facts about him that were completely fabricated, none of which I had provided
Red Devils for life.

Margin

Opinions are my own. Obviously.

MrRicardo

Tried to use an AI coding assistant to fix a bug in a legacy PHP codebase from 2009. It confidently rewrote the entire file in a framework that did not exist when the original code was written

Shane

Got an AI image generator to make a professional headshot from a photo of me. It gave me six fingers and teeth that looked like they belonged to three different people

Badger27

The finger thing is a solved problem apparently, tell that to the three attempts I made last month

Highland Dylan

Asked an AI to summarise a contract and it missed the clause that would have been a dealbreaker. Caught it myself on page 47 at 11pm the night before signing. Never again

StringTheory32

Asked Grok to recommend books by a specific author. It recommended four books. Two of them do not exist. I checked

Fan

Tried to get Claude to help me write a complaint letter in a very formal legal tone. It added a joke in the final paragraph. Unprompted. A joke

Nina26

The confidence is always the thing. It never says hmm I am not sure about this dialect. It just launches in

SilverSurfer

I asked an image model to generate a picture of a dog wearing a hat and it gave me a hat wearing a dog. Technically impressive. Completely wrong
