Morning People vs Night Owls - Which Produces Better Work

Completely unscientific question but one I have been thinking about since I found myself debugging code at 2am last week and it actually went really well. There seems to be a genuine split in this community between people who are productive early in the morning and people who come alive at night.

The case for mornings: fewer distractions, decision fatigue has not kicked in yet, you are aligned with the rest of the world. The case for nights: nobody is messaging you, the internet feels quieter, something about the silence unlocks focus that daytime cannot replicate.

What are you, and do you think it actually matters for the quality of what you produce?

Night owl without question. Something shifts after midnight. The work that would take me three distracted hours in the afternoon takes forty-five focused minutes at 1am

Tried to force myself to be a morning person for years. My best natural window is 10pm to 2am. Stopped fighting it and productivity went up significantly

I think it is more about finding your natural rhythm than either being objectively better. The ones who struggle are those whose schedule fights their biology

The research on this suggests chronotype is largely genetic and relatively fixed. The productivity difference is real but it is about alignment not inherent superiority of either time
