For the last few years, it felt like alcohol was on the way out. More people were cutting back, younger groups were drinking less, and supermarkets were pushing zero alcohol alternatives harder than ever.

Low and no alcohol drinks started appearing everywhere. Beer, wine, spirits, all with alcohol removed but marketed the same way.

But recently, something seems to have shifted.

Some people are noticing fewer zero alcohol options on shelves, less promotion, and less hype around them. At the same time, traditional alcohol is still as visible as ever.

So what changed?

Part of it comes down to demand vs reality. While interest in cutting down drinking is real, not everyone actually switched long term. Trying something once is different from making it a habit.

There is also the issue of taste and price. A lot of zero alcohol drinks are not significantly cheaper than the real thing, and for some people the taste just doesn't match up. That makes it harder for them to replace alcohol completely.

Another factor is behaviour. People might drink less overall, but when they do drink, they still choose normal alcohol. That creates a gap where zero alcohol products don't get used as much as expected.

There is also a cultural side. In many social situations, alcohol is still the default. That makes it harder for alternatives to fully take over, even if attitudes are changing.

So instead of a full shift away from alcohol, what we might be seeing is moderation rather than replacement. People are drinking less, but not necessarily switching to zero alcohol options.

That could explain why some of those products are starting to disappear or become less visible.

At the same time, trends can come and go. Zero alcohol might not be gone, just settling into a smaller, more realistic space rather than being pushed as the next big thing.

So the question is.
Are people actually drinking less, or just going back to normal habits after trying alternatives?
It's not a bug, it's a feature

Feels like people tried it then went back to normal drinks

Opinions are my own. Obviously.

Drinking less but not replacing it with alternatives. Because of cost not taste.
Ole ole ole

The way this has been framed in the media does not quite match the underlying detail. A lot depends on who is making the claim and what they are trying to sell alongside it.

Curious to see how this develops.

I don't know about that. Always the way.

Ha, fair enough. :)
