What is the best opening scene in any film or TV show?

Opening scenes can make or break a film. In just a few minutes, a great opening grabs your attention, sets the tone and makes you desperate to see what happens next. Some are so iconic that they are remembered more than the rest of the film. Directors know the first few minutes are crucial

There are plenty of classic examples. The opening of Saving Private Ryan is brutal and unforgettable. Up's opening montage is famous for making grown adults cry within ten minutes. Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Dark Knight and Inglourious Basterds all have openings that are studied by film students. Star Wars set the tone for a whole franchise with one long shot of a star destroyer. Directors spend months perfecting those first few minutes

TV has its own great openings. Breaking Bad's pilot opens with a man in his underpants driving an RV through the desert, which immediately makes you want to know how he got there. Some shows use cold opens to grab attention before the credits roll. Others build a mood slowly, drawing you in

An opening scene does not have to be loud to be great. Quiet, mysterious openings can be just as gripping as action. The best ones make you curious, not just impressed
