The single biggest mistake is treating a pilot as a fully representative sample of the entire show. When pilots are genuinely often shot months before the rest of a season, sometimes with a different showrunner's early vision, different casting choices, or a noticeably different tone that the writers deliberately adjust once they actually understand what's working after audience and network feedback.

A closely related mistake is judging character writing too harshly this early. Since a pilot has to introduce an entire ensemble in a genuinely limited runtime, often leading to characters feeling flatter or more archetypal than they become once a show has real room to actually develop them over multiple episodes.

People also frequently miss that pilots carry a genuinely disproportionate amount of exposition compared to later episodes. World building, backstory, and setup that a show simply doesn't need to repeat once it's actually established, meaning later episodes often feel noticeably more confident and better paced by comparison.

Another common trap is comparing a new pilot unfavorably against a beloved show's current. Fully matured form, rather than against that same show's own actual pilot, many now classic series had genuinely rough, awkward first episodes that don't reflect what the show eventually and actually became.

The honest summary is that a pilot is genuinely more of a rough sketch and a network pitch than a finished product. And giving a show a real handful of episodes before forming a final opinion catches far more genuinely worthwhile shows than judging purely on that first episode alone ever would
