Cyberpunk 2077 is the next game heading for a live action film, Push Square reports, citing Deadline. Paramount Pictures will make it, with CD Projekt Red involved. Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached as producer. There is no news yet on the cast, director, writer, plot or release date

Di Bonaventura has a long list of credits. They include G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Transformers: The Last Knight, Madame Web, The Meg and Pet Sematary. That is a mixed record, to put it kindly. Some of those films made a lot of money, but few of them are remembered fondly by critics

CD Projekt Red's joint CEO MichaƂ Nowakowski welcomed the deal. He said the studio is excited about Paramount as a future partner who shares its creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise. He added that more details will come at the appropriate time. So for now, this is a deal announcement rather than a film in production

The obvious comparison is Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the anime from Studio Trigger. It ran for two seasons and was very well received, and it even helped bring players back to the game after its rocky launch. Push Square doubts the film will match it. Live action has a much harder job capturing Night City's style on a realistic budget

Then there is the Keanu question. Push Square's Liam Croft says Keanu Reeves would make a great Johnny Silverhand, which would only be fair since he played the character in the game. Game adaptations have had a strong run lately, with Fallout and The Last of Us showing what is possible. Cyberpunk has the world and the style, so it comes down to the people making it

Should Keanu reprise Johnny Silverhand on the big screen? And would you rather have a film or another season of Edgerunners?
