Netflix has confirmed it is cutting about 6 percent of its workforce, which works out to close to 1,000 jobs. TechCrunch reports that most of the cuts are in product, technology, legal and HR. At the end of 2025 the company had around 16,000 full time staff

An internal memo from co-chief executives Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters said the company must be disciplined about where it puts its people and its money. Netflix says it remains on track to meet its full year forecast and will keep investing heavily in the areas that matter most

The background is a tougher competitive picture. Netflix lost the bidding for Warner Bros. Discovery's studios and HBO to Paramount Skydance. It is also competing with YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for people's time, and YouTube reportedly overtook Netflix in average daily viewing in 2025

Netflix has responded in many ways. It has raised prices, expanded its ad tier, added live sports and games, and started offering video podcasts and short vertical videos. Its 2025 revenue was $45.2 billion, with more than $1.5 billion coming from advertising

Job cuts are always hard news for the people affected, and hopefully they get good support. For viewers, the bigger question is whether Netflix can keep making the shows people love while it chases every other kind of entertainment as well

Is Netflix trying to do too many things at once? And how much of your viewing time now goes to YouTube instead?
