My ranking of the top 5 prestige dramas, worst to best, tell me where I'm wrong.

Going to put my ranking out there and brace for disagreement, from fifth to first: Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men, The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and The Wire at number one. Reasoning is roughly that Boardwalk Empire had genuinely gorgeous production but never quite matched the character depth of the others, Mad Men's patient character study occasionally tested my patience despite being genuinely well crafted, and the top three all earned their spots through some combination of tension, ambition and lasting cultural impact. The Wire tops it for me specifically because of how it used fiction to explain systemic institutional failure in a way nothing else on this list attempts

Fully expecting pushback on basically every single placement here, that's honestly half the fun of posting a ranking like this. Tell me specifically where I've got it wrong and why

The Sopranos deserves consideration for the actual top spot given it essentially invented the entire prestige television format everything else on this list builds directly on.

Originating a genre arguably counts for more than refining it later. Depends whether you're rewarding innovation or execution more heavily

Mad Men ranked too low on this list in my opinion, since its patient character study ages genuinely better on rewatch than some flashier options here once you already know where the story's actually heading. Testing patience on first watch doesn't mean it's actually worse. Slow burn shows often reward reconsideration more than immediate viewing suggests

Broadly agree with the overall order here even if I'd swap one or two specific placements around slightly. The Wire at number one feels correct to me regardless of any other disagreement. Solid list overall even with some room for reasonable debate on the middle placements

Breaking Bad deserves the top spot over The Wire honestly, purely for how it sustains genuinely escalating tension across its whole run while still delivering a clean, satisfying character arc. The Wire's ensemble approach is impressive but genuinely harder to stay emotionally invested in throughout. Different achievement but Breaking Bad wins on pure watchability for me

Production values alone don't fully explain why it gets dismissed this quickly in most rankings like this one. Might be suffering mostly from bad timing being compared directly against genuinely stronger contemporaries rather than lacking real merit itself

Where's Better Call Saul on this list honestly, given how it might be the more technically impressive show of this entire era. Feels like a genuine oversight leaving it off a top five prestige drama ranking entirely. Deserves at minimum serious consideration for inclusion somewhere on here
