The first movie was a lot better than I expected. It was not perfect, but it felt like someone actually understood why people like Mortal Kombat rather than just using the name for a random action film.

The sequel really needs to embrace the tournament side though. That is the part fans have been waiting for since the opening credits of the first one.

The biggest challenge is balancing the game references with making an actual movie. Throwing in every character and every fatality might make fans happy for five minutes, but there still needs to be a decent story holding it together.

The reboot had some good foundations. Hopefully the sequel builds on them instead of just becoming a two-hour character checklist.

Johnny Cage is the big test for me. He is one of the most entertaining characters in the franchise, but he can easily become irritating if they push the comedy too far.

Get the attitude right and he could steal the whole movie. Get it wrong and people will be begging for more Scorpion scenes instead

Seems like it from what I have seen. I will update this thread if anything significant changes.

The first film felt like the opening chapter rather than the full experience. It spent a lot of time introducing the world and getting everyone together.

Now that the setup is done, the sequel should have more confidence. Give us the tournament, bigger rivalries and some proper fights between the classic characters.

Still think people underestimate how difficult Mortal Kombat is to adapt. The games are built around fights, but a movie needs characters you care about between the fights.

The 1995 film was cheesy but memorable because it understood the fun side of the series.

Hopefully the sequel keeps some of that energy while improving the action.

More villains would be welcome. Shang Tsung worked well as the classic bad guy, but Mortal Kombat has so many interesting threats.

The Outworld side of things has huge potential. There are monsters, warriors, realms and enough betrayal to keep several movies going.

The fights were one of the strongest parts of the reboot, so I am hoping they go even further with that.

Mortal Kombat needs fights that feel like they have personality, not just people hitting each other for ten minutes.

A Scorpion versus Sub-Zero style rivalry works because there is emotion behind the punches.

A giant four-armed warrior, lightning gods and people freezing each other are not exactly subtle material

The tournament itself is what will decide whether this feels like a proper Mortal Kombat film.

The first one was basically the road to the tournament, which is understandable, but fans want that iconic setup now.

Give us different fighters, different styles and reasons to care about who wins.

One thing I would like to see is more development for the supporting characters. The franchise has a huge cast, but some of them can easily become just costumes and catchphrases.

Even a character like Kano works because there is personality behind the jokes.

Make the fights brutal, keep the characters recognisable and do not be afraid to let the weirdness of Mortal Kombat shine. That is what makes it different from every other action franchise.

The reboot did a decent job of getting the franchise back on track, so the sequel has a good foundation. The biggest thing it needs is a proper tournament feel because that is what fans have been waiting for.

A bigger roster is the main thing for me. Mortal Kombat lives or dies on its characters, and there are so many fan favourites still waiting.

Give us more of the classic rivalries, some creative fatalities and a few moments that make people go "that was straight out of the game"

The balance is making it fun for newcomers too.
