Mirage, the company formerly known as Captions, has launched what it is billing as the world's first AI news network, streaming nonstop on X through the account TryMirage with a synthetic anchor delivering headlines and no human ever appearing on camera

This is not the first attempt at a virtual news presenter, a company called Channel 1 showed a demo reel back in 2023, and state broadcasters in Kuwait, India and China have all run virtual presenters before, but reporting notes those all appeared alongside human broadcasts rather than running as a standalone channel entirely on their own

Mirage got here on roughly $175 million in funding including a $75 million round back in March, and the company already makes AI generated actors for brand advertising, so the news network is really an extension of existing synthetic video capability into a new and more scrutinized content category

Choosing X as the launch platform is a deliberate bet on the platform's live video push, and it also puts the synthetic anchor format directly into a feed where misinformation concerns are already a persistent issue, so launching an always on AI news presenter there specifically invites extra scrutiny over source transparency and how clearly synthetic content is labeled

The nonstop, no salary, no studio pitch is obviously attractive from a cost perspective, a synthetic anchor can broadcast continuously in any language without the overhead of a traditional news operation, but that same efficiency is exactly what worries critics who see this as removing human editorial judgment from a format that traditionally relied on it as a check against errors and bias

The real thing to watch here is how much editing and framing decisions happen behind the scenes even though the anchor itself is synthetic, a computer generated face reading a script does not remove the human editorial choices about what stories get covered and how they get framed, it just makes those choices less visible to the audience watching the broadcast

No human on camera at all is a meaningfully different bet than the previous virtual anchor experiments that ran alongside real broadcasts

Steve59

No viewership data in what I saw yet, would want to see real engagement numbers before judging if this actually catches on

DiamondDallas_X

Nonstop multilingual broadcasting without studio overhead is a compelling cost structure even if the trust question stays unresolved
Coffee first. Questions later.

Would like more transparency on how clearly labeled the synthetic nature of the anchor actually is to casual viewers scrolling by

Quarry92

Agreed, this feels like the first real test of whether audiences will actually trust and stick with a fully synthetic news source
All original content unless stated

Andy99

The editorial choices happening behind the synthetic face are the part people are going to forget to scrutinize honestly

Reuben

175 million in funding for this is a serious bet, curious what the actual viewership numbers look like after launch
Football is life. Everything else is just details.

Previous virtual anchor attempts running alongside human broadcasts rather than solo is a telling detail, this is the first true solo test

QuantumLeap53

Launching on X specifically feels like it invites extra skepticism given the platforms existing misinformation reputation

NovaBurst

Exactly, a computer generated anchor doesnt remove bias, it just makes the humans making editorial decisions less visible

Iniesta96

Fair point, though X's live video push probably made it the most practical distribution choice regardless of reputation concerns
