John Mulaney dropped a tour promo on June 18 that looks far less like a stand up announcement and more like the trailer for a full blown psychological thriller. The clip, titled Mister Whatever, plays out as a dark cinematic mystery with him unraveling the idea that someone is stalking him

It is so well made that fans flooded the comments begging him to turn the bit into an actual movie. The whole thing only reveals itself as a tour ad when the dates appear at the end, which is a genuinely clever bait and switch

What makes it work is that Mulaney commits completely to the eerie tone instead of winking at the camera. It sits in that sweet spot where you are not sure if you are watching a joke or something genuinely unsettling

Whether or not a real film ever happens, it is a reminder that he is one of the sharpest comedic minds working. Most tour announcements are a poster and a date, this was a short film

Watched it three times before realising it was a tour ad, absolute masterclass
