Heartstopper says goodbye for good with a two hour finale movie instead of a fourth season

Heartstopper Forever landed on Netflix this Friday, July 17, closing out the beloved queer coming of age series with a feature length film rather than a traditional fourth season. Kit Connor and Joe Locke return as Nick and Charlie, joined by the rest of the Truham Higgs friend group including William Gao, Yasmin Finney, Corinna Brown, Kizzy Edgell and Tobie Donovan, with Anna Maxwell Martin stepping into the role of Nick's mother Sarah after Olivia Colman was unable to return, and Derek Jacobi joining the cast as well

The story picks up with Nick and Charlie inseparable but facing real strain for the first time, Nick preparing to leave for university while Charlie takes on new independence and responsibility at school, forcing the couple to confront whether their relationship can survive distance and change. Creator Alice Oseman, who wrote and executive produced the film alongside Connor and Locke in their first turn as EPs, described it as an exploration of time, memory, love, pain, the changing of the seasons, and what she calls the core element of Heartstopper, the ordinary magic of everyday life. The film also arrived just weeks after Oseman released the final installment of the original graphic novel on July 2, giving both the book series and its screen adaptation a matching conclusion

The finale includes more intimate scenes than previous seasons, something both lead actors addressed directly ahead of release. Locke said the scenes feel beautiful and that shooting them felt very safe thanks to an experienced intimacy coordinator, while Connor emphasized that any actor doing intimate scenes should have real autonomy and security, crediting the production's creative team for making that possible regardless of his and Locke's producer titles

Heartstopper debuted in 2022 and became an instant hit, racking up over 53 million hours viewed in its first three weeks and sustaining similar success across two further seasons before wrapping in October 2024 with a season three finale that left plenty of loose threads. For a cast where the show was often literally their first ever acting job, several of them have described the finale as a genuinely bittersweet way to close out a project that shaped both their careers and, for a lot of viewers, their own understanding of queer coming of age stories
