The Asgard are one of the best things about Stargate SG-1. Little grey aliens named after Norse gods who turned out to be the real inspiration for Viking mythology on Earth. Brilliant concept. Each one had a distinct personality too which is remarkable given they all looked identical.

Thor is the obvious starting point. Supreme Commander of the Asgard Fleet. Friend to Earth. Appeared from season one through to the finale. Voiced by Michael Shanks who also played Daniel Jackson. Thor had warmth and genuine friendship with O'Neill. Their banter was one of the show's best relationships.

Loki is the compelling villain of the group. The renegade Asgard scientist who spent decades abducting humans for genetic experiments. His episode Fragile Balance where he cloned a teenage O'Neill is a classic. When Thor finally hauls him in front of the council you genuinely feel his contempt for the lesser races he was experimenting on.

Heimdall is criminally underused. Voiced by Teryl Rothery who also played Dr Fraiser. Warm enthusiastic brilliant geneticist working on the Asgard cloning problem. Her one proper episode Revelations in season five is excellent. She was researching a 30,000-year-old Asgard ancestor hoping to reverse the genetic degradation. Didn't get enough screen time.

Hermiod is the Atlantis Asgard and he might be the funniest. Assigned to the Daedalus as ship's engineer. Constantly muttering in Asgard which turned out to be English played backwards. Had a spectacular attitude problem about humans misusing Asgard technology. Surly brilliant and unexpectedly entertaining.

Kvasir stepped in when Thor and Heimdall were busy elsewhere. More reserved than Thor but genuinely helpful. Worked with Carter on some of the show's most complex science episodes.

Freyr was the cold one. High Council member. Refused to help Earth multiple times citing treaty violations. Came across as the Asgard equivalent of a bureaucrat. Not beloved but added important dimension showing not all Asgard were as warm as Thor.

The tragedy of the Asgard ending in Unending is one of the most genuinely sad moments in science fiction television. An entire civilisation choosing to end itself rather than let their technology fall into wrong hands. They gave everything to Earth first. That finale hit hard.
