PUBG is heading to television with a big name attached. PC Gamer reports that Netflix has a live action PUBG series in development, with Donald Glover set to write, direct, executive produce and star

His brother and regular collaborator Stephen Glover is attached as a writer and executive producer. No premiere date, other cast or plot details have been announced

Glover has a remarkable list of awards, including two Primetime Emmys, two Golden Globes, five Grammys, two Peabodys and five Writers Guild awards. His Amazon series Mr and Mrs Smith received 16 Emmy nominations for its first season in 2024

PC Gamer points out that PUBG has almost no existing story, which leaves the writers a great deal of freedom. The battle royale format, with a hundred players dropped onto an island to fight until one remains, has obvious dramatic potential

Glover is a surprising but exciting choice, as he has shown with Atlanta that he can turn a simple premise into something strange and memorable. Video game adaptations are enjoying a strong run on streaming services. A battle royale series could easily become a tense survival drama

Can a PUBG series work without an existing story? And is Donald Glover the right person to make it?
