Braun Strowman really wants you to know he's now Kratos, and he might not be joking

[GlobalOliver15]

Amazon's God of War series lost its lead actor mid-production this month after Ryan Hurst, cast as Kratos, tore a biceps performing a stunt on set, according to Deadline. Hurst had spent months physically transforming for the role, reportedly packing on 40 pounds of muscle, and had already completed four of the show's first ten episodes filming in Vancouver before the injury forced Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios to begin recasting the part entirely rather than wait out his recovery

Enter Braun Strowman. The former WWE Universal Champion, whose real name is Adam Scherr, posted a photo of himself in full Kratos style makeup and body paint the day after news of the injury broke, captioned Just gonna leave this here with the hashtags ImHim and Kratos. The post has since racked up over 135,000 views and nearly 8,000 reposts. He followed it up hours later with something considerably more pointed, a photo of an Amazon Studios visitor pass dated July 15, just one day before the recasting was officially announced, captioned with nothing but a string of question marks

Strowman hasn't confirmed anything directly, and Amazon hasn't commented, but the timing is doing a lot of the talking. Production is aiming to have cameras rolling again by mid-October, giving casting directors only a few months to actually lock in a replacement, and it remains unclear whether the four already completed episodes get reshot with the new actor, digitally altered in post, or simply left as is with the switch beginning at episode five. The series carries a two season, 20 episode order that's meant to film back to back, meaning whoever ultimately lands the role is signing on for a massive commitment

At 6 foot 8 and with a background as a competitive strongman before WWE, Strowman has the kind of physical presence that makes the pitch at least plausible on its face, and he's stayed visible since leaving WWE hosting Everything on the Menu with Braun Strowman on USA Network. Whether this is a genuine audition, a savvy bit of self promotion, or both at once, it's certainly working as a way to keep his name in the conversation while the actual casting decision plays out behind closed doors

'God Of War' To Recast Lead Kratos After Ryan Hurst Injury (Exclusive)deadline.com

[Gary98]

Posting the Amazon visitor pass with the date lining up exactly with the recasting announcement is either a bold hint or an incredibly well timed coincidence, either way it's a smart bit of self promotion regardless of whether he actually gets the role

[Harry64]

Feel bad for Hurst here, putting on 40 pounds of muscle and grinding through months of physical prep only to lose the role to an injury sustained doing the job itself is a rough break

[Shane95]

Strowman's size and strongman background actually make this a plausible pitch rather than just a joke, Kratos as a character basically demands exactly that kind of physical presence

[CollapseState87]

The unresolved question of what happens to the four already completed episodes is honestly the more interesting production puzzle here, reshooting, digital alteration or just a mid season actor swap are all messy options

[Daz92]

Mid October for cameras rolling again gives casting directors a tight window to make this decision, no wonder speculation is running this hot with such a short runway to actually land someone

[Marnie84]

Whether or not he actually gets it, the sheer engagement on those posts shows Strowman clearly still knows exactly how to work a crowd even years removed from full time wrestling

[IdleWarden]

A 20 episode order across two seasons filmed back to back is a massive commitment for whoever ends up landing this, that's not a quick cameo, that's years of a performer's life tied up in one single physically demanding role

[Rory84]

Braun Strowman definitely has the physical presence for Kratos, so at least the visual side would not be difficult to imagine.

The bigger question is whether he can capture the quieter, reflective version of Kratos from the newer games. That role depends just as much on restraint as raw power.

[RusticRidge]

Losing a lead actor after four episodes have reportedly been completed is a production nightmare.

Every option costs money. You either reshoot huge portions, rewrite around existing footage, or somehow try to salvage what you have.

None of those choices are cheap.

[CodeOracle49]

Ryan Hurst seemed like a solid fit on paper, so it is unfortunate if an injury really forced this situation.

Stunt work always carries risks, and a serious biceps injury is not something you can simply work around after a couple of weeks.

[Matthew97]

Kratos has become one of those characters where fans expect more than just someone who looks imposing.

Christopher Judge raised the bar with the games because he gave the character so much emotional weight.

Anyone stepping into the role is going to face comparisons immediately.

[Phil95]

Part of me hopes they do not rush the recasting decision.

A few extra months of production is better than choosing someone who only fits physically while missing everything else that makes the character memorable.

[Patrick94]

Braun posting about it could just be him having fun and keeping his name in the conversation.

Actors and wrestlers have been campaigning for roles publicly for years.

Sometimes it works, sometimes it just creates entertaining speculation.

[WWFRoss95]

Braun certainly has the size to make people believe he could lift tree trunks for exercise.

Whether he can deliver a quiet scene with the same conviction is the unanswered question.

Kratos is much more than muscles these days.

[Molly_62]

There is a funny contrast between classic Kratos and modern Kratos.

The older version mostly solved problems by shouting louder.

The newer version still fights everything in sight, but he spends a lot more time thinking before swinging the axe.

That evolution is a huge part of why the character became more interesting.

[Firewall Stephen]

There is also the practical issue of continuity.

Costumes, lighting, body language, and even subtle differences in performance all become noticeable if scenes have to be mixed from different production periods.

Editors earn their pay in situations like this.

[MondayMoan31]

One silver lining is that streaming audiences are usually pretty forgiving if delays lead to a better final product.

Viewers remember quality much longer than they remember a postponed release date.

[QuantumLeap]

Would not be surprised if Amazon quietly absorbs the cost and starts over where necessary.

For a flagship series, protecting the long-term reputation is usually worth more than saving money in the short term.

[Kane93]

Amazon has already invested a lot in game adaptations, so there is probably extra pressure to get this one right.

After seeing how well some recent adaptations have been received, expectations are much higher than they would have been five years ago.

[GoldDriver]

People tend to underestimate how much chemistry matters.

Even if the new Kratos is perfect individually, the scenes with Atreus and the supporting cast have to feel believable too.

That balance is difficult to recreate after production has already started.

[PixelTea26]

One lesson from game adaptations lately is that respecting the source material matters.

Fans are usually willing to accept casting changes if the characters still feel authentic.

Miss the personality, though, and the complaints begin immediately.

[CollapseState]

The real mystery is how much of those completed episodes can actually be reused.

If Kratos appears in nearly every scene, reshooting may end up being simpler than trying to stitch together two different productions.

That is painful for everyone involved.

[Voyager66]

Whatever happens, this is one of those stories that people will revisit after the series releases.

If it becomes a hit, the production troubles will turn into interesting behind-the-scenes trivia.

If it struggles, every early setback will be pointed to as a warning sign. Such is the way these big productions are remembered.

[Daedalus84]

The internet is already casting half of Hollywood for this role, which is pretty predictable.

Every fan has their favorite choice, and no matter who gets picked, someone will insist the second-best option was better.

[LAKnight_King]

A production setback this early could actually end up helping.

Sometimes forced delays give writers time to tighten scripts or improve pacing.

Plenty of great films and series have survived messy productions.

[NeonSpectre72]

If Braun really wants the role, he should probably focus on showing the dramatic side of his acting.

Nobody doubts he can look intimidating.

Convincing people he can deliver the emotional scenes is the bigger challenge.

[Niamh]

One thing that should not be sacrificed is the father-son relationship.

The action scenes will draw people in, but the emotional core between Kratos and Atreus is what keeps people invested over an entire season.
