Aardman teaches its animation students to embrace imperfection, not AI polish

[BradBytheway]

At Bristol's Aardman Academy, the studio behind Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run and Shaun the Sheep, students learning stop-motion are being taught to deliberately preserve handmade imperfections rather than chase digital polish, even as AI increasingly lets anyone generate images and video in seconds. Head of the Aardman Academy Mark Simon Hewis said the studio teaches students to be a little bit wonky, since what some might see as flaws are often exactly what audiences connect with most

Hewis pointed to growing public interest in analogue and handmade work specifically, arguing that not trying to polish everything within an inch of its life is precisely what's made Aardman brilliant over its 50 year history. Student Annie Buckeridge acknowledged the industry is genuinely challenging right now but remains hopeful, pointing to a recent BBC stop-motion piece for the World Cup as proof that handcrafted animation still resonates and that as creatives, they believe it will come back

The approach runs directly counter to a broader industry push toward speed and automation, betting instead that audiences will increasingly value work that feels unmistakably human precisely because so much content can now be generated instantly and cheaply. Curious what people think about this specific strategy, does leaning into visible human imperfection actually work as a lasting differentiator against AI generated content, or is it a comforting but ultimately losing bet against overwhelming cost and speed advantages

Not polishing everything within an inch of its life is honestly a philosophy that extends well beyond animation, that instinct toward controlled imperfection shows up in music production, writing and design too

Fifty years of success gives Aardman real authority to make this specific bet, this isn't a new studio guessing at what audiences want, it's built directly on decades of evidence that the wonky approach actually works

The BBC World Cup stop-motion piece being cited as proof handmade animation still resonates is a smart specific example, concrete recent evidence beats abstract optimism about the format's staying power

Genuinely worth asking whether audiences actually notice or care about handmade imperfection consciously, or whether it just registers as an unplaceable quality that feels different without viewers knowing exactly why

[Griffin39]

Cost is the real threat here more than audience taste, stop-motion is slow and expensive by nature, and that economic pressure doesn't go away just because people say they value the handmade look
