Speaking at the World Robot Conference in Beijing, Unitree founder Wang Xingxing said humanoid robots will need somewhere between two and ten years to reach what he calls their ChatGPT moment, the point where a robot can walk into an unfamiliar home and complete roughly 80 percent of everyday tasks based purely on text or voice instructions. That is a notably longer and more hedged timeline than the under five years he offered at the very same conference just last year.

The honesty here is refreshing given how much hype normally surrounds this specific industry. Robots are not yet as efficient as humans at most labor tasks and take real time to learn new skills, a genuine bottleneck that industry leaders speaking alongside the conference openly acknowledged rather than papering over with marketing language. Chinese consumer electronics companies like Xiaomi showed off their own humanoid platforms at the same event, and the broader takeaway from multiple executives was that raw hardware demonstrations have gotten impressive while actual reliable, repeatable labor performance still lags well behind.

HSBC analysts published a note earlier this summer arguing the current wave of humanoid robot shipment growth could prove illusionary without a significant leap forward in the underlying AI models that actually control these machines, since a robot with great hardware but mediocre embodied intelligence still cannot reliably fold laundry or navigate a cluttered kitchen the way marketing videos tend to suggest.

Worth noting that most humanoid units shipped globally so far are still going to research institutions, universities, and demonstration settings rather than genuine commercial deployments doing real repeatable labor, and UBTech has separately described its own Walker S2 robots as no more than half as efficient as human workers even at the start of this year.

The gap between viral videos of robots dancing or doing backflips and a robot that can actually be trusted alone in your kitchen remains genuinely enormous, and it is worth remembering that every time a new demo goes viral

Wang pushing his own timeline back from under five years to as long as ten years in the span of a single year is honestly the most credible thing he could have said. Genuine humility about the gap between hardware progress and actual embodied intelligence progress is rare in an industry this hyped.

The distinction between hardware demonstrations and reliable repeatable labor is the entire ballgame here and it rarely gets the attention it deserves in mainstream coverage. A robot doing a backflip once on stage is a completely different engineering problem than a robot folding the same load of laundry correctly every single day for a year straight.
