Uber and Pony.ai plan to bring 2000 robotaxis to Europe

Uber and the Chinese autonomous vehicle company Pony.ai just announced an expanded partnership to bring 2000 robotaxis to four cities in Europe. Neither company has said which cities yet or given a firm timeline, only that details will come out in phases, but this is a pretty big scale up from where things started

The two companies first partnered back in May 2025 focused on the Middle East, then earlier this year expanded into Europe with a launch planned in Zagreb, Croatia through a local company called Verne. This new announcement pushes things well beyond that single city into a much bigger four city rollout

Under the joint deployment model, Pony.ai supplies the autonomous vehicle tech while Uber provides the ride hailing platform people already use. Fleet management stuff like maintenance, cleaning and charging gets handled by local providers, and ownership of the actual vehicles can vary depending on the market, which sounds like a pretty flexible setup for scaling across different countries

Uber has apparently partnered with more than 30 autonomous vehicle companies over the past few years, so Pony.ai is just one piece of a much bigger strategy to grab market share in the robotaxi space before it fully matures. Still, 2000 vehicles across four cities is a meaningful number if it actually happens on schedule

Worth watching how European regulators respond to a Chinese AV company scaling up this fast on the continent, that seems like the part most likely to slow things down
