Retail's next AI battleground is the physical store, not the website

[StarKnight36]

With Home Depot expanding its Magic Apron AI assistant across more than 2,000 US stores, a piece in Marketing Tech News argues the next phase of retail AI is moving off screens and into physical shop floors rather than staying confined to ecommerce. The AI assistant includes localized store knowledge and lets customers use text, voice and image queries to find products, navigate the store, and get tailored expert advice, connecting conversational AI directly with inventory, product data and store wayfinding to provide in-aisle assistance through a smartphone

The piece frames this as AI enhancing the physical store rather than threatening to replace it, addressing a common retailer concern as AI use grows more widespread. Beyond direct customer assistance, generative AI is also increasingly augmenting frontline employees themselves, with some estimates suggesting up to 60 percent of tasks across retail roles, from first-line managers to entry-level staff, could eventually be automated in some form, freeing up staff time for more complex customer interactions

The piece connects this to a broader shift toward unified commerce, where customer, product, pricing and inventory data get shared in real time across both digital and physical channels rather than running on separate disconnected systems the way a traditional omnichannel setup typically does. That real-time connected data is what actually lets AI bridge the online and in-store journey coherently. Curious what people think about AI assistants showing up specifically in the physical aisle, does that kind of in-store help genuinely improve the shopping experience, or does it feel like an unnecessary layer between a customer and simply asking a human employee

The next AI shopping battleground isn't online, it's instorewww.marketingtechnews.net

2,000 plus stores is a genuinely large scale rollout for something this new, that's not a cautious regional pilot, that's Home Depot committing to this as core infrastructure across nearly its entire footprint right out of the gate

[Its_Jackson62]

The framing around enhancing rather than replacing the physical store feels like careful messaging aimed at easing employee and customer anxiety, worth watching whether staffing levels actually stay stable once these tools are fully embedded

[PulsarElk]

Real-time shared data across digital and physical channels is honestly the harder and more important technical achievement underneath all of this, the AI assistant itself is just the visible customer facing layer sitting on top of that unified backend

[Always_Craig96]

Up to 60 percent of tasks being potentially automatable across retail roles is a striking number worth sitting with, that's a meaningfully different scale of disruption than most people probably associate with a simple in-aisle help assistant

[Leo68]

In-aisle AI assistance genuinely solves a real practical problem, finding a specific product in a massive hardware store is often more frustrating than any online search ever was, so this use case makes intuitive sense as a starting point

[NatureBoyOwen16]

Measurement becoming genuinely harder as AI influences discovery both online and in-store is an underrated point buried in this piece, tracking a customer journey gets a lot messier once AI touches every single stage rather than just the final digital transaction

[Puma37]

Worth remembering Home Depot specifically sells a product category where in-aisle help has always mattered enormously, that context matters a lot for how well this particular use case actually generalizes to other types of retail

[Tyler_16]

Curious how customers who prefer human interaction actually respond to this in practice, some people will love the instant AI answer, others will find it a poor substitute for an experienced employee who genuinely knows the specific inventory
