QuSecure, a post quantum cryptography and cryptographic agility company, has announced a partnership with Carahsoft Technology to make its post quantum security tools more accessible to US government agencies through Carahsoft's established public sector distribution channels

Carahsoft is essentially the go between that a lot of security and IT vendors use to actually reach federal, state and local government buyers, so this partnership is less about new technology and more about distribution, getting QuSecure's tools onto contract vehicles that government procurement teams can actually use without a lengthy separate vendor qualification process

Post quantum cryptography has moved from theoretical concern to active procurement priority pretty quickly over the past couple years as NIST's standardized post quantum algorithms have matured and agencies have started facing actual deadlines for migrating away from cryptography that would be vulnerable to a sufficiently capable future quantum computer

Cryptographic agility, the ability to swap out cryptographic algorithms relatively easily as standards evolve, is arguably the more important piece of what QuSecure sells here, because the specific post quantum algorithms that are considered secure today could still shift as cryptanalysis research continues, and agencies do not want to hard code themselves into an algorithm that might get broken or deprecated later

Government agencies tend to move slowly on this kind of infrastructure migration even when the underlying threat is well understood, harvest now decrypt later attacks where adversaries collect encrypted data today with the intent to decrypt it once quantum computers are capable enough are the specific scenario driving urgency here for anything with a long confidentiality shelf life

This is a fairly quiet infrastructure story compared to flashy qubit count announcements, but arguably it matters more in the near term, the actual cryptographic transition happening at government scale is going to be one of the most consequential real world impacts of quantum computing well before anyone builds a machine capable of breaking current encryption directly
