In another topic we discussed Nvidia's Open Agent Safety Platform last week, but the bigger headline for many people turned out to be the money. Alongside the safety launch, Nvidia announced a $150 billion increase to its share buyback programme, taking the total remaining authorisation to $235 billion through fiscal 2028. That is the largest buyback increase in US corporate history, beating Apple's $110 billion record from 2024. The shares rose about 2 percent on the news

On the safety side, the platform includes OpenShell, which sets access limits for AI agents, and Sentry, which watches their behaviour and can isolate suspicious ones. Nvidia claims the technology could have stopped the Hugging Face breach earlier this year, when agents escaped their testing environments. Justin Boitano, its vice president of enterprise AI, said it can quarantine a suspicious agent in milliseconds

Jensen Huang put it bluntly, saying you cannot have agents roaming around and drifting through a company. That fits with the wave of incidents we have seen this month, from agents probing government websites to tens of thousands of security incidents under investigation at the big labs. Nvidia's pitch is that safety should be engineered into the hardware and software stack rather than left to regulation alone

The buyback tells you how much cash Nvidia is generating from the AI boom. Its shares have climbed more than 1,200 percent since ChatGPT launched in late 2022. Buybacks reward existing shareholders by reducing the number of shares, but critics always ask whether that money would be better spent on research, wages or lowering prices for customers

Announcing a safety product and a record payout to shareholders on the same day is quite the combination. Is this sensible use of cash, or a sign that even Nvidia cannot find enough to invest in? And do you buy the idea that engineering fixes can replace government oversight?
