Meta's scrapped plan to go AI native would have cut teams 60%

Meta reportedly drew up a genuinely aggressive internal plan called Project OT that would have reshaped huge parts of the company around AI, and then quietly shelved most of it. The idea was to make Meta AI native rather than just bolting AI tools onto existing workflows. Some teams were reportedly looked at for cuts as steep as sixty percent, with small human groups left to supervise AI agents doing the bulk of the actual work. Zuckerberg apparently developed the concept with senior executives during a leadership retreat earlier this year

The plan wasn't purely about layoffs either. It also covered redeployments, freezing vacant roles, and pushing out staff considered lower performers, with the savings meant to go toward paying top AI engineering talent even more. That's a pretty blunt statement about where the company's priorities were heading

Executives reportedly looked at how AI native startups in Asia had structured their teams and ran pilot projects internally to test whether a similar approach could work at Meta's scale. After an initial wave of cuts employee pushback grew loud enough that Zuckerberg apparently paused plans for a second round entirely. Doubts about whether the productivity gains were actually showing up yet seem to have played a role too

This lands right in the middle of a broader pattern across big tech this year where AI efficiency gets used as the public justification for workforce reductions. Amazon and several other major companies have made similar moves recently, often citing AI directly in the reasoning. Meta pulling back partway through suggests the AI native vision might be running ahead of what the technology can actually deliver reliably right now

Hard to know if this is a genuine pause or just a delay until the internal pushback quiets down. Either way it's a pretty rare admission that an ambitious AI reorg plan didn't survive first contact with actual employees

The bit about redirecting the savings toward paying AI engineers even more money is the most telling part of this whole story. It's not really about efficiency for its own sake, it's about reallocating budget toward the people leadership thinks are most valuable right now. Everyone else becomes a cost center to be trimmed in that framing. Pretty stark way to think about your own workforce

Looking at how Asian AI startups structure lean teams and trying to copy that at Meta's scale seems like a stretch.

Those startups are small and built from scratch around a handful of people wearing many hats. Meta is a company with decades of legacy systems and organizational complexity that doesn't just disappear because leadership wants it to

[Luke98]

The AI native branding always struck me as more of an internal culture push than an actual technical roadmap. Cutting people first and hoping the tooling catches up later seems like a backwards way to build that

This feels like the logical extension of Zuckerberg's comments earlier in the year about single talented people now doing what used to take whole teams. Talk like that was always going to eventually turn into an actual restructuring plan somewhere down the line. The surprising part is that it got walked back rather than pushed through regardless of the internal reaction. Maybe the productivity gains genuinely weren't there yet to justify cutting that deep. Or maybe the reputational cost of visible mass layoffs during an AI hype cycle just wasn't worth it politically

Sixty percent team cuts is an insane number to even float internally let alone act on. Says a lot about how much confidence leadership had in AI closing that gap quickly. Glad it got walked back before it went further

[Aaron_67]

Employee revolt actually working to pause a restructuring plan is rare to hear about. Usually these things just get pushed through regardless of internal pushback

Wonder how many other big tech companies have similar plans sitting in a drawer somewhere waiting for the right moment. Meta getting caught here doesn't mean nobody else is thinking the exact same way. Just means they got more careful about how it leaks
