Meta announced it will build a 1 gigawatt AI data center in Sturgeon County, Alberta, its first facility in Canada and its 33rd data center globally. The project represents a total investment of roughly 13 billion Canadian dollars, about 9.2 billion US dollars, and will take two to three years to construct

Alberta won the site partly on cold economics, natural gas priced well below the US benchmark and a cold climate that cuts down on the mechanical cooling costs that quietly eat into every hyperscaler's operating budget. Meta says it worked with several Canadian energy firms in advance to plan for the facility's power needs years ahead of it actually coming online, and the company is committing to fund new generation and grid infrastructure itself rather than just drawing down existing capacity

The facility is expected to support over 3,000 construction jobs at peak along with more than 300 permanent operational roles once running, plus funding toward local roads, water infrastructure and community nonprofits. Alberta's government is framing the deal as a genuine economic win too, estimating roughly 250 million dollars a year in taxes, royalties and industry levies once the site is fully operational

This sits inside a much bigger picture for Meta, which is reportedly planning to spend up to 135 billion dollars on AI infrastructure in 2026 alone, nearly double what it spent the year before, as it works toward doubling total computing capacity from 7 gigawatts this year to 14 gigawatts by 2027. Whichever way you look at it, the real competition among the big AI companies right now increasingly seems to be about who can lock down cheap, reliable power at scale rather than who has the flashiest model
