The first reviews of Apple's iPhone Duo are in, and Engadget is impressed. Sam Rutherford gives Apple's first foldable phone a score of 8.8 out of 10, calling it a first class foldable. It costs 1,999 dollars

The hardware sounds excellent. There is a 5.4 inch 120Hz outer OLED screen rated up to 3,000 nits, and a 7.6 inch inner screen with a matte nanotexture finish to reduce glare. Inside is the A20 Pro chip, with a titanium frame, IP68 water resistance and Touch ID in the side button. It weighs 254 grams

The cameras include two 48 megapixel rear cameras and a 12 megapixel Center Stage front camera. Battery life looks strong, lasting 28 hours and 48 minutes in Engadget's video rundown test. It charges to about 50 percent in 20 minutes with a 60 watt adapter, and supports 25 watt Qi2 wireless charging

Rutherford praised the hinge, displays, performance, battery and cameras. His criticisms were the weight, the price and the number of apps that have not yet been updated for the larger screen. MacRumors has a round up showing broadly positive reviews elsewhere too

Apple was late to foldables, as it often is with new categories, but it seems to have arrived with a polished product. The price will put many people off, and app support needs to catch up. Still, a foldable iPhone that gets this right could push the whole category forward

Would you pay 1,999 dollars for a foldable iPhone? And has Apple waited long enough to get foldables right?
