IBM and Lockheed Martin, together with ETH Zurich, launched a Swiss quantum innovation hub anchored by the country's first IBM Quantum System Two, to be installed at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano by the end of 2026. IBM will operate the system, ETH Zurich will coordinate access and provide expertise and resources for Swiss industries, startups and academia, and CSCS will host the hardware and provide power, cooling and security infrastructure, under an initial three-year agreement running through 2029

The system will run IBM's Quantum Nighthawk r2, the company's fastest and most advanced processor, featuring 120 programmable qubits and a high-speed reset architecture executing more than 100,000 circuits per second, up to 25 times the throughput of its predecessor Heron family. Housed in the same facility as CSCS's Alps supercomputer, the system gives Swiss researchers access to chemistry, materials science, optimization and financial services applications, alongside IBM Quantum Network learning resources including coursework, certifications and hackathons meant to build domestic quantum talent

Lockheed Martin and IBM are planning two initial joint research projects through the hub, one exploring quantum sensing applications for navigation and another focused on additive manufacturing of metallic alloys, extending an existing strategic collaboration between the two companies. The announcement builds on IBM's nearly century-long presence in Switzerland and a separate 10-year IBM-ETH Zurich collaboration on next-generation AI and quantum algorithms announced earlier this year.
