Google announced a 13 billion euro investment in Finland over the next two years, its largest single investment anywhere in Europe, covering digital infrastructure, clean energy and local economic partnerships. The announcement builds on 15 years of Google's presence in Hamina, where the company converted a former paper mill into a data center in 2011, an operation that has supported more than 600 Finnish suppliers across construction, operations and network fiber between 2023 and 2025 alone

Google says the initial construction phase in 2027 and 2028 will support more than 37,000 jobs nationwide and contribute 3.6 billion euros annually to Finland's GDP, with the completed facilities eventually supporting thousands of permanent roles spanning engineers, security staff, catering and facilities management. The company is separately investing 31 million euros into local communities in Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos and Vaala over four years, including AI upskilling programs for more than 4,400 workers and new training pathways for 100 Finnish students pursuing data center careers

On energy specifically, Google signed a 22-year agreement supporting the life extension of the Loviisa nuclear power plant, is adding new onshore wind capacity, and is contracting a new 94-megawatt battery system meant to help stabilize electricity prices during cold, windless periods. The company is also funding native forest and wetland regeneration near its sites, along with public saunas, fishing piers and recreational trails for local communities. Curious what people think about this kind of large infrastructure investment being paired so directly with community and environmental commitments, does that pairing genuinely offset local concerns about a data center's resource footprint, or does it mostly function as reputational insurance for what's fundamentally a straightforward capacity expansion

The AI upskilling program for 4,400 workers feels like a genuinely meaningful accompanying commitment, training people for the actual jobs this investment creates rather than just building the infrastructure and hoping local talent catches up
Works on my machine :D

Public saunas and fishing piers alongside a data center investment is a small but genuinely charming detail, shows some real attention to what actually matters to the specific local community beyond the purely economic pitch

Rachel

Worth remembering this kind of community and environmental pairing has become fairly standard practice for major data center announcements generally, genuinely welcome regardless of how much it's also smart reputational positioning

Cold, windless periods specifically being called out as the target for that battery system shows real attention to Nordic grid conditions, worth noting how location-specific this whole energy strategy actually is

Sinead_47

Curious how transferable this specific model, pairing a huge infrastructure investment with visible local community and environmental spending, actually is to markets with less established green energy infrastructure than Finland's
I'm not always right, but I'm never wrong ;)

600 Finnish suppliers already supported by just the Hamina facility gives real concrete texture to what these enormous investment figures actually translate into locally, beyond just the headline euro amount itself

Fox

A 22-year nuclear plant life extension agreement is a genuinely long term energy commitment, shows Google is thinking about power supply on a timescale that matches its own multi-decade infrastructure plans rather than just near term needs
