Google has changed how it targets ads for people who use one of its newer AI features. 9to5Google reports that Google will now use data from Gmail and Google Photos to target ads, but only for users who have turned on Personal Intelligence

Personal Intelligence lets Google's AI draw on your own emails, photos and other data to give more personalised help. The policy change took effect on 16 October, and it means the same data can now shape the ads those users see

Users who do not want this can switch it off. The option is in Google's My Account settings under Data and privacy, where Personal Intelligence and ad personalisation can be managed

Google stopped scanning Gmail content for ads back in 2017, after years of criticism. This change brings some of that back, though only for people who opted into the AI feature and only through it

It is a reminder that AI features are often tied to advertising in the end. Many people will have switched on Personal Intelligence without expecting this. Google should make the link much clearer when people enable it

Will this make you turn off Personal Intelligence? And is it fair to link AI features to ad targeting?
