Germany's Forschungszentrum Jülich has inaugurated JION, a trapped-ion quantum computer now operational at the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, performing its first public calculation during the launch ceremony. JION stores quantum information in electrically charged ytterbium atoms held in a vacuum by electromagnetic fields, and unlike superconducting quantum processors, it doesn't require operation at temperatures near absolute zero. The system uses a control method called magnetic gradient induced coupling, developed in Siegen, which relies on microwaves and carefully varied magnetic fields to manage individual qubits, an approach the center says simplifies control and could support scaling to larger systems

JION was developed through EPIQ, a partnership between the Jülich Supercomputing Centre and quantum computing company eleQtron, with North Rhine-Westphalia's Ministry of Culture and Science providing about 21 million euros in funding over four and a half years. The machine will be integrated into JUNIQ, the center's unified quantum computing infrastructure, letting researchers assign specific computing operations to quantum processors as part of larger calculations run alongside conventional supercomputers, with potential applications spanning logistics, materials research, chemistry and machine learning

Two additional funding approvals were announced alongside the launch, up to 25 million euros for eleQtron's SQALING project to develop scalable chip-based trapped-ion platforms, and up to 25 million euros for Q-STAR.NRW, which aims to procure and integrate a semiconductor quantum computer with up to 200 qubits into JUNIQ. Minister-President Hendrik Wüst said the state wants Germany to become the world's leading location for quantum technology. Not requiring near absolute zero temperatures is a genuinely underrated practical advantage for trapped-ion systems specifically, the cryogenic infrastructure superconducting qubits need adds enormous cost and complexity that this approach simply sidesteps
