Chipmaker GCT Semiconductor is progressing several direct to device and hybrid satellite cellular programmes, continuing development and certification work through the second quarter of 2026 with partners including Globalstar and another unnamed major satellite communications provider, as it works to expand its 5G chipset business beyond pure terrestrial networks

The technical challenge here is genuinely interesting, satellites in low earth orbit move at close to 27,000 kilometres per hour relative to a ground device, which produces Doppler shift and timing variations that terrestrial cellular hardware was never designed to handle, so the chipsets and reference platforms GCT is building have to actively compensate for those effects rather than just adding a satellite antenna onto existing 5G silicon

This work is happening alongside the maturation of the actual cellular standards for non terrestrial networks, 3GPP Release 17 introduced NR based NTN support plus satellite connectivity for NB-IoT and eMTC devices, Release 18 added further NTN enhancements, and Release 19 continues refining both NR-NTN and IoT-NTN, so GCT's hardware work is tracking a standards process that is still actively being built out rather than working against a finished spec

GCT reported shipping more than 5,100 5G chipsets during the quarter, up about 71 percent sequentially, spanning fixed wireless access, satellite connectivity, private networks and industrial IoT, which sounds like a small number in absolute terms but reflects a company still very early in commercializing this specific technology rather than one already at meaningful scale

The financials underline just how early stage this still is, GCT reported second quarter revenue of only $1 million against a net loss of $20.4 million, though a chunk of that loss was a non-cash accounting item tied to warrant liabilities rather than pure operating burn, and the company says first half 2026 revenue already slightly exceeded its entire 2025 total, which at least points toward the right kind of trajectory even from a very low base

What I find most interesting here isn't GCT specifically but the broader pattern, direct to device satellite connectivity is quietly becoming a real feature of ordinary smartphones and IoT devices rather than a novelty, and the actual enabling work is happening at exactly this unglamorous chipset and certification layer, which almost never makes headlines compared to the satellite launches themselves but is arguably the harder engineering problem

3GPP standards work for NTN is still actively evolving through Release 19, which means hardware built now has to be somewhat future proofed against spec changes still coming
