The "power of the sun in our hands" line always sounds dramatic, but there is some truth buried in there. Fusion is basically copying what stars do, just in a very controlled and stubbornly difficult way.

The gap between experimental success and something you can plug into the grid is still huge though.

Exciting progress, but not quite time to cancel your electricity bill yet :)

People have been saying fusion is 20 years away for about 50 years now, which is why skepticism sticks around.

That said, recent progress does feel different. More private funding, more competing designs, and actual milestones being hit.

Still early, but the vibe has shifted a bit :-\

What gets overlooked is engineering versus physics. The physics is getting more understood, but building something that runs reliably and economically is a whole different game.

It is like proving a plane can fly versus running an airline.

The funniest part is how every breakthrough gets reported like it is the final step. Then you read deeper and realize it is one piece of a very complicated puzzle.

Still, those pieces are stacking up faster now than before.

So maybe not hype, just very slow momentum

There is also the fuel side that people forget. Fusion uses isotopes like deuterium and tritium, not magic infinite energy.

Still abundant compared to fossil fuels, but not literally endless.

So the "infinite energy" line is more marketing than reality :P

Private companies jumping in has definitely changed the pace. When money and competition show up, things tend to move quicker.

Government projects laid the groundwork, now startups are trying to sprint with it.

A lot of the excitement comes from net energy gain milestones. That is a big deal scientifically, but it does not mean practical power plants are around the corner.

Scaling is the real mountain to climb.

And it is a big one :(
