The Quantum Insider ran a long interview with Dorit Dor, who spent 30 years in leadership roles at Check Point before co founding QBeat Ventures, a fund exclusively focused on quantum technology investing. Her core argument is that quantum startups can learn a lot from how cybersecurity matured as an industry, especially around go to market strategy and staying focused instead of trying to build the entire stack yourself. She frames it less as a lecture and more as a set of hard won lessons she watched play out firsthand over three decades in the trenches

One point she kept coming back to is that technology does not sell itself, and a lot of quantum founders are apparently making the same mistake cyber companies used to make, trying to do everything end to end instead of relying on the rest of the ecosystem. She also flagged that customers want standards rather than custom cryptography, since buyers generally have no way to independently certify something unusual and will default to whatever is proven and easy to implement. That second point in particular feels like it should be printed out and taped above every quantum founder's desk

QBeat has closed its first round and has four portfolio companies so far, spanning things like control systems for superconducting qubits, testing and validation tools for other quantum hardware makers, post quantum cryptography, and trapped ion computing, with a target of building out to around 15 companies and 50 million dollars deployed. Dor was pretty candid that she is investing across multiple modalities rather than betting on one winner, since she does not think any single approach dominates in the near term. It is a deliberately hedged strategy rather than a conviction bet on any single technology

She also had a pretty blunt take on the recent wave of quantum companies going public through SPACs, saying she grew up believing public listings meant a company had proven real product market fit, but SPACs do not really carry that same signal and a lot of investors going that route may not even realize what they are buying into. That is a fairly pointed thing to say given how many quantum SPAC deals have closed over the past couple of years. She stopped short of naming names, but the implication was hard to miss

Worth a read if you follow the quantum computing space at all, it is one of those interviews that is refreshingly specific rather than just hype about qubits and superposition. Most quantum press coverage still leans heavily on the mystique of the technology rather than the actual business mechanics behind building a company around it, so this one stands out

Her take on public listings not meaning what they used to is fair. I would push back slightly though, since even a shaky SPAC still forces some financial disclosure that private rounds never require. Not zero signal, just weaker signal than she seems to be giving it credit for

Fifty million across fifteen companies is thin for hardware. Semiconductor fabs alone burn through that kind of money in a single bad quarter, so I have to assume they are leaning hard on syndicate partners for anything past a seed check

Read this on a break and came away more interested in Orange QS than I expected. Testing and validation is such an unsexy niche in this space, but somebody has to actually verify these qubits work before anyone builds anything meaningful on top of them.
